our neighbors are nuns without internet access so I gave them our WiFi password so they can watch live streams of their churches Easter service, hopefully it gave them some comfort.
I think that's one of the groups who are most isolated: those without internet access. We have a good friend in poor health who cannot cope with screens (they get a headache very quickly, so don't have a computer, or a mobile phone). They used to be able to phone their shopping order through to Sainsbury's but that facility has gone. Every form of help available seems to need access to t'internet.

  • Hi
Well I've been answering phone calls for together4dover for anyone wanting help to get there shopping or prescriptions and passing there requests to the people that go out and get there shopping or prescriptions
  • Admiral insurance have contacted me with some changes to my insurance and breakdown policy because of my situation as a key worker, making it much easier for me to stay on the road and get to work should anything untoward happen to my car.  I don’t know if other insurers/breakdown firms have done the same but I was really impressed.

They've also given a blanket £25 rebate to all current car insurance customers. Not life-changing money but unsolicited and I can't fail to be impressed. Just need to figure out how to put that money to best use to help someone else, as while of course I'm not going to suggest that they give the money to their shareholders instead, I'm in a good place financially and don't feel right pocketing it.

I'd take it and give it to the local foodbank.

  • My seven year old daughter had me in tears yesterday. She brought down her moneybox (full of coppers) and asked me to help her count it. When we'd reached the total (£14.86) my daughter announced that she wanted to spend it on some boxes of chocolates for the NHS staff.

She was a little disappointed that we couldn't go out there and then to get the chocolates but I reassured her that next time we go shopping, it will be the first thing on the list.
    That is a lovely gesture.

When I had a major op I wanted to buy a huge box of chocolates for the ward.  However a retired nurse friend said that everybody bought chocolates or chocolate biscuits and a lot of the nurses were really struggling with their weight.  She thought some hand cream might be nice so when I was in TKMaxx I had a look and found lots of Crabtree & Evelyn small sizes, 12 to a box and they were very cheap.  If you haven’t used C & E hand cream before it’s gorgeous.

The nurses were really pleased and 2 or 3 said “it makes a nice change from chocolate”
Oo that is a great idea x

Thank heavens for such groups.  Ours is called Viralkindness and when I Googled it I found out that there are many “viral kindness” groups throughout not only the U.K. but in other countries.

The amount of help out there is amazing.  I live in a sheltered independent living over 60s community, we all have our own properties and communal facilities.  Only about a third of the residents use the internet so I circulated viralkindness details to the others and some of the residents have told me they are a lifesaver.

We are lucky as we are helping each other as much as we can but there are many older people who are isolated.

I hope people don’t mind me posting all this but I feel sad at the moment because one of the most popular residents told me yesterday her 84 year old sister had just died from Alzheimer’s (another cruel trick of nature) and she hadn’t been able to visit her for a while.  I wanted to hug her but we are following the 2m rule strictly.

Today, whilst shopping at a local shop, I was given a free glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and then a free little bottle of hand sanitiser.  The staff had been given a load from a large distillery so were giving it away.  I drank the juice (delish) and then donated the sanitiser to an elderly friend who is shielding.  Taking and giving!
