The same reasons I don't have access to a FS scheme mate..or a company car...or a generous expense account.
Two out of three of those are due to the changes in the tax laws; the ending of the FS scheme is because your boss took money out of the pension fund cos he knew he could get away with it, maybe if you had a half-decent union.....
Times move on, working practices move on, the economy moves on and certain things may become unsustainable.
So decent pay and pensions for the working class is unsustainable? However the massive bonuses and wage increases for senior management is sustainable?
I am sorry to break the news, but that is a load of tripe, the gap in pay between the shop floor and the boardroom is rising at levels not seen since Victorian times yet when the proles ask for more money we get fed all this crap about there being no money yet the next day your company will post record-breaking profits (and record breaking bonuses).
I'm afraid I am unable to give you the full explaination but I do know from speaking to the missus (who is an economist) that F/S schemes are generally no longer viable options for companies that have a future in the UK.
Because people in the financial world say it is not viable, does not mean it’s true.
Unless you can give me a full explanation, forgive me for not believing you.
Whenever, I ask people this whether they be lay people or experts, I always get the same non-answer (the world is changing innit).
I don't agree, I'm aware of many organisations (private and public) who have closed F/S schemes to new members while the existing members retain their right to F/S.
The practice of closing FS to new staff is a recent occurrence (only in the last decade) companies are now starting to close FS to existing employees too.
Over the last two years many companies have moved existing staff off FS schemes and the trend will continue.
I am sure you don’t believe me so I put final+salary+existing into Google and this is what came up.

Are you still confident that BAA will not remove FS from existing staff a couple of years down the line?
“Nice name BTW - Tell me, do your views stem from it or it from them?”
Will knowing my financial situation make my points more or less valid as I cannot see how it is relevant?

Lacking Wedge
You will have to forgive me for not joining a union, I have worked with several obver the past few years and I can honestly say that never have I come across a more backward looking bunch of luddites. In terms of big picture thinking they are stuck at 25x Zoom...
Also, is it possible (just maybe) that actions by business to restrict such things like FS pension schemes has contributed to the UKs unprecedented economic growth over the last decade? Worth thinking about....
I guess at the end of the day it really doesn't matter wheteher you or I am right about the viability of F/S pension schemes. Whether you like it or not however, their ongoing demise IS reality and the actions of a few thousand disgruntled sheep at BAA will do nothing other than to encourage redundancies in the short and medium term (see big picture comment..)
Oh and just for the record, I am senior management (recently, got off my a*se, developed my skills, took the plunge and found myself a Director role - go figure!) so I guess I'm sorted then!Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0 -

Oh !!!!!!, I'm flying to Oz on the 17th supposedly for a holiday of a lifetime after saving hard for months and months. If this ruins it I'm going to cry.0 -
Pete111, i am not a member of a union and have never been, however i believe in workers rights to withdraw their labour if they feel they are getting a bad deal.
So Peter, can you tell me what the big picture is as i don't seem to get it either?
"Also, is it possible (just maybe) that actions by business to restrict such things like FS pension schemes has contributed to the UKs unprecedented economic growth over the last decade? Worth thinking about...."
And who is enjoying this growth exactly?
Repossessions are at their highest since the last recession in the early 90's, the gap between rich and poor is at its highest for 100 years, the number of children beneath the poverty line is returning to victorian levels, the level of debt in this country is at an unsustainable level (this website is popular specifically that reason). This growth you talk about is based on debt and is not built on anything solid (see Northern Rock).
There is no economic miracle mate, it is just a mirage propped up by confidence, hot air and cheap loans.
"Whether you like it or not however, their ongoing demise IS reality and the actions of a few thousand disgruntled sheep at BAA will do nothing other than to encourage redundancies in the short and medium term (see big picture comment..) "
I would argue that reduced rights and perks would encourage redundancies in the short and medium term as companies would realise that older employers cost too much and would get rid of them.
Congratualtions for your promotion to senior management, however you should not forget how tought life was before you moved into your ivory tower and not all working class people are too stupid or lazy to achieve what you have.0 -

We fly back on the 9th , ...............or not? , just have to wait for BAA to announce their dates ( I am guessing they will vote for a strike )
Just for the record I can see why they dont want new employees to have the same pension deal and i would probably agree with them , but still stand firm that its everyones right to negotiate working conditions in their place of employment and take industrial action
I'm not very good and putting this stuff down lol0 -

And for people too lazy to click :
"0600 hours, Wednesday 9th January 2008 to 0600 hours, Friday 11th January 2008
0600 hours, Wednesday 16th January 2008 to 0600 hours, Friday 18th January 2008"
Just for Virgin Atlantic.0 -
Do the Unions have until close of business today to announce any strike i.e 5.00pm, for the earliest strike day to be the 27th, or do they have until midnight?
If it is the later, it really will be a long, long day/night of nail biting!!0
