BAA strike

  • Once upon a time people were forced to work 20 hours a day seven days a week, for pay of a carrot and a turnip! Working pracrices evolve, what worked 10, 20, or a hundred years ago is not always what is best now.

Just because this particular change doesn't necesarily go in your favour (although my guess would be that if they do do away with the FS scheme altogether, they'll replace it with the best posible alternative), doesn't mean its wrong.

I'll bet no-one threatens to strike when the Government put up the NMW every year, or when they increase the number of days paid holiday everyone must be given!

You dont think better working practices were brought in out of the goodness of employers hearts !!!

ever heard of the Tolpuddle Martyrs?

Does anyone know what time the ballot results are to be announced? I’ve every sympathy with anyone who has a rubbish pension, I just joined my own company’s (not final salary based) pension scheme last week, but to be honest my main concern at the moment is whether me and my parents are going to see my brother get married in America next week. There’s no information anywhere and it’s driving me crazy waiting!

Sky news say either today or tomorrow , i dont think the strke can take place before the 27th tho , when do you fly ?............I hope you make it , I can have a holiday anytime , a wedding is sightly different

It wasn't relevant why changes in working pracices are brought about. My point was that things change. That is a fact of life.

Well lets hope your job doesnt change for the worse , my point was that they change because people are/ were prepared to fight for their rigts AND the rights of other people ( the last bit was the important part )

What people, who are they? Fighting for rights is one thing when people need it, fighting for the rights of people who don't exist is entirely another thing.

So why can't new employees not have the same rights as their collegues who have joined before a certain date? I always hear this stuff about generous pensions being a thing of the past like their is some major shift in the law of economics that renders this obscelete, maybe someone can explain this to me.

The same reasons I don't have access to a FS scheme mate..or a company car...or a generous expense account.

Times move on, working practices move on , the economy moves on and certain things may become unsustainable. I'm afraid I am unable to give you the full explaination but I do know from speaking to the missus (who is an economist) that F/S schemes are generally no longer viable options for companies that have a future in the UK.

This is a trend, first you remove the rights for new employees, then you go after the existing ones, this has happened in most industries and is a familiar tactic.

I don't agree, I'm aware of many organisations (private and public) who have closed F/S schemes to new members while the existing members retain their right to F/S. The logic here is similar to that in the film minority report - ie arresting people for their future criminal actions. However, last time I checked, the unions did not have 3 weirdos in a swimming pool to tell them what BAA may or may not do in the longer term...or do they?

Nice name BTW - Tell me, do your views stem from it or it from them?

We fly next Thursday 27th, 9.30am. I'm not quite sure if it's 7 clear days or just 7 days notice they have to give, if it's 7 clear days then we're ok. And if we don't hear anything at all today we're fine too, but it's going to be a long day. We have a vague idea that we could get the eurostar and fly from Paris if things go wrong, it'll probably cost a fortune, but like you say a wedding is slightly different. I hope everyone gets to go on their holidays.

reading my policy it says you are not covered for :

''Any claim that results in strikes or industrial action that were public knowledge before you booked your trip''

so looks like I am covered

dont understand the public domain part of your poicy surfingh?

    Lesley,

You are correct - after talking to my insurance company again. Because I booked at the beginning of Nov before the ballot was started and the news stories started, I'm covered. They assumed I booked after the ballot started. So, you are all covered if you booked or started your policy before the ballot started.

If they announce it today, legally they strike can start anytime from 00:00 on the 27th. So all flights on the 27th could be affected. If announced tomorrow, it would be the 28th at the earilest.
