BAA strike

  • My final word here, it really doesn't matter what any of you say. We are fighting to save our pensions and save our pensions we will.

Reading these posts, we will loose as much sleep about you, or anyone else loosing their holidays as you all would about us loosing our pensions.

But when BAA back down and we win, safeguarding ours and future worker's pension, I will enjoy my retirement and look laughing at my neighbour who worked all their life to make someone else rich.

    Over and out.

You sir, are Deluded beyon beleif. You have swallowed the Union speel hook line and sinker. You clearly have no idea what so ever about the basic financial reasoning behind the BAA move, and indeed many other institutions that have scrapped final salary pensions.

IF this scheme is left open to new entrants, then there is a VERY high probability that several years from now, once those new entrants start to claim their final salary pension (which could be before you claim yours depending on the age of those entrants), the entire scheme could go belly up. Leaving you and thousands of others without a bean.

I hope you get used to the cold conditions on the picket line, because if the scheme is not closed to protect the existing members, you will be experiencing similar cold conditions during your retirement when you cant afford the heating bill.

This is typical mentality from the unions, who are growing increasingly aware that society as a whole has moved on from the strike culture. This has very little to do with safeguarding anything and considerably more to do with a minority of Union leaders wanting to abuse the very little power they have.

Take a look in the real world for a breif moment and take a little time to research exactly why final salary pensions are dissappearing, and you may understand exactly why people accuse you of being extremely short sighted.
  • Hear, Hear chesterfield.

Unfortunately all of this will go completely over the heads because they are just the puppets at the end of the unions string.

Isn't it funny how the whole country can see this save for a couple of thousand deluded (or infuenced?!) Unite members.

BTW; unite members; have you ever wondered about the salaries and pension funds of your precious union leaders (the ones You pay for with your subs!). Dig deep and then complain about the fat cats!

It just shows what this company, union and members think about the millions out there wondering if they will see their families this XMAS.
ITS NOT JUST ABOUT A SIMPLE HOLIDAY.
As usual joe public take the hit. BAA dont care, we are not business customers !

AND if you are 35 or less why strike ?
You will change job "I hope" in the forseeable future if you are so unhappy with the conditions "LIKE MANY OTHERS DO"

5 years pension will be worth very little a month by the time you retire !!! Or go belly up because of this strike !!! ITS A JOKE !!!

What this nugget has failed to say is that BAA have GUARANTEED to maintain a final salary pension scheme for 10 years for existing members!! What an amazing deal.... and here's me waiting in anticipation of my New Year travel being disrupted by greedy egotistical zealots. Here's the text from BAA's CEO sent to emplyees today. Does this smack of someone who isn't trying their damnest to avoid a strike??

    Unions offered improved pensions guarantee

Further talks took place with the unions this week over the company’s decision to close the final-salary pension scheme to new employees.

In response to your concerns that the pensions of existing members might be at risk in future, we offered the unions an improved guarantee.

We proposed that the final-salary scheme would remain in its current format for 10 years. As far as we are aware this guarantee is unprecedented among leading British companies.

    This offer has three conditions:
The current scheme deficit does not exceed £250m – to protect the pension scheme from significant changes in the stock markets
The unions accept the closure of the final-salary scheme to new employees
    There is no industrial action.

There are no plans to close or change the scheme for existing members after this guarantee period ends.

We also tabled further improvements for the defined contribution scheme with an additional contribution rate of 10 per cent, and the offer of further talks on the matching rate and issues specific to the fire service.

The unions' main issue was still the closure of the final-salary scheme to new employees.

We reiterated that this decision does not affect current members. However, we firmly believe that by reducing the scheme’s exposure to stock market volatility we are protecting the future benefits of existing members as well as the company’s financial stability.

We will seek further talks with the unions following the ballot announcement to try to resolve this issue.

    <snip>

Fair play to them, as they have increased it (albeit with the conditions you mentioned) from the 6 years they were previously offering. Still a far cry from unconditionally guaranteeing it for all exisiting members until their retirement though.

  • lucky lucan i accept that they have offered the 10 year deal and it is a good one but have you noticed how this has only been offered since the ballot has been in progress. weve gone from no guarantees to 6 yrs to 10 yrs. we are getting there but just very slowly . remember this company operates a very healthy profit margin ....... was that lucky lucan or lord lucan ? come back when you know something i dont
  • Have any of you given any thought to the consequences of your actions. If your employers are not happy with the outcome of your actions they can slap a 90 day notice on your union.meaning you could all become new employees sooner rather than later.Ask around your local council employees if this is true, because some are already in this predicament.I am not against strikes for the right reasons ,but as far as I can see this is a union flexing muscle they dont have.
  • ah my Friend, I may have been out of the country for a long time, but I still have my contacts at the top. My point is, you have got a good deal from negotiation - everyone plays to the wire. you won't get any more, so even if you get the vote, don't use it to alienate poor old Joe Public. I suspect that your union bosses are just using BAA as a pawn in a political game with Gordon Brown. The losers will be the public and you - BAA are itching for a fight I suspect and you lot have just handed it to them on a plate. And from your fan mail, I can see that you will get NO support. You will be begging BAA to bring you back for £100 Christmas bonus after they sack you all and offer you revised terms & conditions. They don't call me Lucky for nothing.
