Monmouthshire BS - online withdrawal facility
Upon adding a current account for withdrawals I've received a letter by snail mail asking me to confirm the account details and an evidence in a form of original bank statement. I presume the statement should be for the account in question. The problem is of course that I've registered for online statements ages ago. Am I right in thinking that statements from online banking don't count as original? Are there any known workarounds?
Which bank? You can often request one off paper copies free of charge.
Lloyds. When I try to order a statement online I get a message: We're sorry, but the statement sheet you requested can't be ordered online. Please contact your nearest branch to order.
I can download or print a PDF statement for my Lloyds current account. I am sure you can use this for Monmuthshire BS. Don’t you have this option?

Last time OH tried to use statements printed in branch or at home, they were rejected as non-original. On the grounds that home-printed can be altered using e.g., Photoshop and "Before printing the statement in a branch you could have changed your address to anything". Only statements delivered by Snail Mail were acceptable.

I don’t know how they could tell whether you printed the statement, or whether the bank did. I have been using self-printed versions of PDF statements for years. It’s been several years since I set up my nominated account at Monmouthshire, and whilst I can’t remember whether I sent them a paper copy or the actual PDF, I am sure they didn’t get a statement printed by a bank. Just send them what you have.

As an aside, I usually use Starling when I need to provide a bank statement, as they let me create a certified one. Such statements have always been accepted everywhere, even by NS&I who are generally very old-fashioned.

Thank you - that's good to know. I usually use my Lloyds account for withdrawals, and I imagine they need a statement for the account given to them. But I will try to print pdf and to convince my branch to order a printed statement.

Edit to add: online statements that one could get from Lloyds look very different to those that arrive by post.

Well that's as it should be, but I too am quite surprised it is being enforced somewhere. Bank statements don't generally contain security features that would defeat forgery, although some are printed on paper that is of such low quality it would be difficult to obtain.
The last few times I have been asked for such documents, I've been able to upload the original PDF, which if digitally signed (many are not) would be more tamper-proof than any printed statement.
  • Original bank statements. I find it worthwhile to keep paper statements for the account I most often use as my linked account. It means I always have one ready, should the need arise.
  • I asked Monmouthshire BS a while back via secure message if a statement is really required and if they can send me a pre paid envelope in this case of if they can provide me an opportunity to securely upload a digital file. The response was they are happy to verify the details I provided electronically and that I don't have to send anything.

They sent me a letter asking me to confirm current account details, that I need to sign and to send back without a prepaid envelope.

Yes, had the same letter and did what I described above and it worked.
