How can such a simple thread topic/question turn into a rather pretentious diatribe into the psychology of posting ? And who has the right to say what is "irritating" ? If MSE members want to name their first ISP to an O/P who seems to be making no particular point, where is the harm ? Answer the O/P or ignore him/her. On the face of it, and given the large number of posts on this thread, it seems merely that people love a bit of nostalgia. There seems no need to create a sub-thread about the meaning of life........................1

I'm questioning the purpose of the posts as I've never see any user with a posting pattern such as the OP which isn't commercial in nature, in almost every thread the user never replies to their own threads no matter how much activity they generate and their threads cover a wide spectrum across the forum sections which is also extremely unusual. The only explanation I can see for such a posting style is to harvest the information from it and of course I could ask the OP but they never respond when asked. If people are fine giving their information away then at least they should be agreeing to it as such use is not allowed on this forum since the OP is clearly not verified. It's really quite simple despite the repeated attempts to spin my posts into something else.2 -
I still recall in about 2002 NTL telling me they didn't approve of more than 1 person using the connection at the same time. That was after I'd connected a WiFi router for the first time and called them for some tech support.1

When I first had freeserve, did it get taken over and was renamed wanadoo or did I just change ISPs ??

Just imagine nowadays if you had to pay for the call charges when you are on net,how high the bill would be.
I think when I ran up a £40 bill when I got the first internet box from Argos in early 2000 I soon left it back, it just gave you internet through your TV. Bought a PC soon after.
Maybe we could broaden the thread a little and discuss the cost of your first PC.
Mine was £1500 from Mesh including printer and scanner in 2000.
Remember Tiny and Time pc makers, think they used to have a lot of high st shops as well.

Nice idea aq------lots of nostalgia on this long-running site.

First was AOL dial-up as the CD came with the shiny new DELL PC I bought from saving my first wages until I had saved enough.
Then I upgraded to AOL 512k broadband shortly after it first came available at my exchange. After a couple of years I switched to Demon Internet, and since then I've been with loads. I'm currently busy switching away from Plusnet to Zen Internet 80/20 fibre.0
