If you don't have anything of value in the hand luggage, and you aren't bothered about contents going missing en-route, maybe it's worth the risk.  Not a risk I would want to take though.

and are happy(?) to pay the fee for putting oversized hand luggage in the hold...
Having paid once I'm certainly not being caught out again. The cost of a bag is far less than the cost of paying for hold luggage.  What is irritating though is that how difficult it is to buy a cabin case that complies with Flybe's rules. We've booked a flight for next month to Belfast so had a look in the city centre yesterday. As an example, 1 in Debenhams in a horrid reddish colour and 1 in John Lewis at an extortionate price were the only compliant bags in any shop. We've now ordered some on Amazon and even if they only lasted for one trip, they're cheaper than the one way Flybe hold baggage charges!

Personally, I'd like to see every airline strictly enforce their maximum dimensions rules and charge passengers who do not comply.
Your post shows that people do indeed learn when hit in the pocket. :)
It is evident, there is a lot of purchasing of single or rarely used luggage bags. What an environmental waste.
Standardisation and less frequent changes might help.

    Maybe.
But until then...each airline sets their own rules.
Your choice whether to comply or not.

Good luck with that when you're confronted by a check-in agent or at the boarding gate by somebody who says 'your bag is too big. It will have to go into the hold and I'm going to charge you a shed-load of money for not taking notice of the rules'.

What have Q&As on this board got to do with confronting airline staff? Thats just pain daft
I do note your vexation at oversized bags. Its actually very funny when there are so many bigger things to be concerned over :)

You've not used the 'quote' function correctly so your post doesn't make sense.
I think you'll find I've expressed no vexation about over-sized hand luggage.
I simply said I'd like airlines to enforce their rules.
You said 'the OP can 'point to the number of replies'.
    Point out to whom?
And why are you referring to yourself in the 3rd person?
    Aren't you the OP?

If the OP (i.e. you) decides to risk taking a bag bigger than the airline's stated maximum dimensions, no amount of pointing out anything to anybody is going to make a blind bit of difference if they say he has to pay.
To say or advise anything different is just plain daft.

Standardising carry on size would make a lot of sense, but commonsense doesn't come into it.  Either abide by the rules set down by the individual airlines or be prepared to pay the price - literally.

I agree but I can see why people get cross about this.
To be fair, the Flybe rules make sense as their overhead lockers really don't fit the usual cabin bags. I'm no aviation expert but I assume they're old planes from the days when almost everyone travelled with hold luggage or just a briefcase.
With some other airlines, the rules are just perverse and, I suspect, used to make money particularly as the cost of hold luggage seems to be rocketing too. I take the point about environmental impact but when you can buy a bag more cheaply than paying for the hold baggage cost in one direction then the airline's are being irresponsible.
When my new bag arrives on Thursday I'll be telling my friends it's available to be borrowed. For a small fee!
  • Cabin luggage rules is an issue which causes vexation, especially as applied at check in, and when you get the bad news - having to pay extra.
    Ryanair @ 40cm x 25cm x 20cm appears to be the least user friendly (no surprise there then), followed by Flybe @ 55cm x 35cm x 20cm.
Compare to Easyjet and Jet2 who have much more generous 56cm x 45cm x 25, with no weight restriction on the former seems the best deal.
    TUI's 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is not bad either
However passenger opinions don't cut the mustard - when all else fails ....................read the instructions.
Saw these in local store - this is not a recommendation, I get no commission, just flagging up for interested parties to consider.

The 'vexation' should be directed to the person at fault.
That will be the person who just made an assumption that their bag would be OK rather than making sure. The information is readily available and very clear on most (if not all) airline websites.
Or the person who is well aware of the rules of the airline they're flying with and chooses to ignore that and rely on anecdotal experience from random strangers on t'interweb.

As you say 'passenger opinions don't cut the mustard'.

Thanks for the link. They look quite good bags for the price.
Sadly, both of them are too big for Flybe.
Our new bags arrived today from Amazon. We paid less than £60 for the 2 of them. Hold luggage would have cost us a minimum of £23 each way per bag (more with the tour operator or paid last minute at airport) so £92 for one trip.

Its good we can ask and answer questions; and yes we are all strangers. Thats how MSE started and exists.
Often its the most objective way to give advice and ultimately, take a view.
It would not be nice if it was untolerated as some might want it.
