If you don't have anything of value in the hand luggage, and you aren't bothered about contents going missing en-route, maybe it's worth the risk.  Not a risk I would want to take though.

Having paid once I'm certainly not being caught out again. The cost of a bag is far less than the cost of paying for hold luggage.  What is irritating though is that how difficult it is to buy a cabin case that complies with Flybe's rules. We've booked a flight for next month to Belfast so had a look in the city centre yesterday. As an example, 1 in Debenhams in a horrid reddish colour and 1 in John Lewis at an extortionate price were the only compliant bags in any shop. We've now ordered some on Amazon and even if they only lasted for one trip, they're cheaper than the one way Flybe hold baggage charges!

I agree maman.  It's a pain the **** having to check for each airline and then go searching if you have nothing which is the correct size.  I've got 4 or 5 different size bags now, some of which may well never be used again.
  • Checked my existing cabin bags against the Flybe dimensions ,  width and depth were ok but a couple cm taller than required.( mainly due to handles )
So they would fit in the box ok, but be sticking out a bit at top.. but going on some of the comments on this thread, Flybe dont compromise... annoyingly looks like i will have to shell out on some new ones .

You're right. I've seen bags being refused because the wheels were sticking out of the top of the box.

My brother-in-law recently went on a stag weekend.  Outbound with Easyjet and return with Ryanair.  One person booked all the flights and apparently only checked the hand luggage size outbound, presumably assuming all airlines were the same.  Wrong.  All bags were too big for hand luggage with Ryanair and they all got hit with about 25 euro charge to put them in the hold.  Easy money for Ryanair, and a reminder (A) never to assume anything and (B) don't think Ryanair won't check.

Personally, I'd like to see every airline strictly enforce their maximum dimensions rules and charge passengers who do not comply.
Your post shows that people do indeed learn when hit in the pocket. :)

Fly 3-4 times a year always hand luggage only once in the last 10 years has my bag been checked that was RyanAir from LPL-LIG  - never been checked on any other RyanAir or other Airline - have flown - Virgin, Air France, Thomas Cook, Delta, WestJet, Ryanair - lots and lots of different UK and international airports, FlyBe mainly to IOM, EasyJet, KLM
Are you therefore volunteering to pay any charge other travellers receive if they proceed on the basis of your past experience?

Maybe the OP can say 'some random poster on t'interweb has never had a problem so I thought I'd be OK too'... ;)
The OP can take advice, warnings and anecdotal advice and make his/her mind up.

No the OP can point to the number of replies. This is a point of contention and vexation

Good luck with that when you're confronted by a check-in agent or at the boarding gate by somebody who says 'your bag is too big. It will have to go into the hold and I'm going to charge you a shed-load of money for not taking notice of the rules'.
I'm sure they'll be very impressed by the number of replies.
I'm also sure it will add to your own vexation.
