Argghh i have some Flybe positioning flights booked for later in the year, better get the tape measure out and check my cabin bags ( have used them a few times with TUI, Ryanair & EasyJet, with no issues )
Absolutely right.  Flybe 55x35x20.  TUI  55x40x20. Jet2 & EasyJet 56x45x25.  Try taking your hand luggage from EasyJet onto Flybe and you will/may/could have a problem.  Hand luggage has become an absolute nightmare over the past several years.  I have a camera bag that I used for years on every flight.  Now it would be too big for most short haul flights at least.

We flew to Amsterdam with Flybe at the end of last year. Bags too big. A very expensive mistake.

    Ouch! :'(
That should be enough to convince people to take a bag within airline limits.

Are you therefore volunteering to pay any charge other travellers receive if they proceed on the basis of your past experience?

Maybe the OP can say 'some random poster on t'interweb has never had a problem so I thought I'd be OK too'... ;)
The OP can take advice, warnings and anecdotal advice and make his/her mind up.

Ok thanks. Ryanair, I can take a smaller bag for short haul.
Virgin and TUI will be long haul. Will it make a difference as a lot of experiences above are short haul?

Generally allowances are bigger and in general I'd say they are more lax, but there still might be an occassion for example where they know an aircraft is completely full or perhaps when staff are training when they decide to check everything to the letter.
Personally I don't like taking chances because it's just such a pain if things go wrong and this is one situation where you have no power (if you get arsey they could refuse to fly you).

You don't mention whether your bag was the correct size or not which is kind of crucial here.

Check-in and Gate staff will vary routines regularly to reduce complacency, and maintain Security.

Bottom line is, the customer has agreed a contract with the airline, and has no comeback if he/she tries to side-step the contract, intentionally or not.
