Ok thanks. Ryanair, I can take a smaller bag for short haul.
Virgin and TUI will be long haul. Will it make a difference as a lot of experiences above are short haul?
Oh absolutely.  Long haul airlines don't care what you take as carry on.  Is that the answer you want to hear, as you seem to be ignoring all the answers which say to stick to the airlines limits.

I have taken all answers on board. Its a subject that vexes.
There is nothing stopping me channelling feedback - in this case more info to help with answers. That is not ignoring answers in my case; unless you can substantiate otherwise.
    You seem agitated.

    There are no answers.
The facts are that each airline sets their own cabin baggage policy.
They may or may not choose to enforce that policy at any time.
Other people's experiences do not give you answers.
They may or may not give you confidence that it's worth risking taking a bigger bag than each airline policy states.
I don't think anyone is getting agitated.
I'm sure nobody cares one way or the other what size bag you take.

Of course, experiences are not definitive but helpful
Its not about trying to bring the biggest or heaviest bag through. Its about a bag which is the same cubic volume  but slightly bigger on a side

Again it comes down to luck of the draw with enforcement but even then it's not certain. A squashy bag like some backpacks, not overfull, would probably get into the measuring crate although technically too big whereas another might fail because the wheels stuck out.
Out of interest, is this just a sort of straw poll to help you decide whether to purchase a new bag ?

But airlines don't specify policy by cubic volume.
They specify maximum height, depth & width.
If your bag is bigger on any of those measurements, it's too big.
It's entirely up to you whether you take that bag or not.
But be in no doubt - if it's too big, it's too big.
    Regardless of the cubic volume.
    Your choice.

I'm not a regular traveller and when I did I was safely within limits. That was a few years ago now.
Since then I have my lucky bag; I use daily and would like to travel with it as I would also use it on arrival; so it's practical. It has nice memories. Its a leather weekender which is malleable. It seems such a waste of resources to get a (hard) case just for travelling with little practical use outside it.  As said, I'm not a frequent traveller up to this point, but hoping to do more now so I need to take on the answers onboard (thats a pun for the one who loves puns).
