Does it mention unlimited alcoholic drinks included in the brochure, if it doesnt then you are still getting what you paid for

The law has already passed and come into force already. It was passed early Jan and from what I've read online any bookings made before a certain date (sometime early Jan) would get the normal AI conditions and for other bookings they are restricted.

It is only within certain areas of Majorca and Ibiza, although dubbed as a bid to clean up lager louts and drunken behaviour its been part of a campaign that has been going on for years to clean up the area. Since 2015 I think any new hotels built in these areas must be at least 4*, any renovations should take a hotel to 4* (note hotels not hostels, apartments or guest houses), booze cruises and bar crawls were banned a couple of years ago and now all inclusive is being reduced in the hope that people will step out of the hotel and spend more money in the local economy.

The Balearic government recognised that they were very dependent on tourism and that the local economy has suffered in recent years due to an influx of AI hotels as money is then not always kept on the islands and instead goes to larger chains or tour operators. They also realised that these areas were attracting a younger crowd with less disposable income and also the cost to the locals for extra policing, cleaning up vomit and rubbish every morning, abundance of sex workers and drug dealers etc was making locals move away from the area so decided to do something about it. Very wise probably in the long run to be fair.

As for the 6 drinks limit, I'm no big boozer but I do think 6 in a day is less than you think. Beers are very rarely pints in an AI so a couple of small beers or wine with lunch, a cocktail before dinner and  then 3 more drinks to last all night isn't much really when spaced out and for those who chose to stay in and watch entertainment etc it it may not last long.

Wow, and people choose to go to places like this for a holiday?

I never choose to so AI as I’d rather eat out but I just wanted to stop at this particular hotel for other reasons. I’m hoping this is resolved ASAP. If it comes into effect I shall be seeking advice and making a complaint as I’ve paid for full AI
If you're not a big drinker anyway,  you've chosen the hotel for other reasons and you prefer to eat out, I can't see that this would make that much difference to your holiday anyway. If they did reimburse you anything how much is it going to be - a few quid for the odd extra Drink? It does sound more like complaining for the sake of it, given the other information that you've said.
I'm not a big drinker either and 6 alcoholic drinks a day would be plenty. I guess it depends on your definition of a big drinker. I like my liver intact.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Once, staying in Tsilivi on Zante, we caught a local bus to Laganas for the day (not sure if this is still one of the young, let's get as p***ed as we can as fast as we can places). It had the same reputation as Faliraki, Kavos & Malia.
Waking down the main street at 10:30 am, strewn with polystyrene burger boxes and pizza boxes, empty bottles and smashed glasses, shops and bars were hosing down their properties. The stench of drink and vomit sent us scurrying back on the next bus.
So, yes, people do choose to go to places like this for a holiday.

  • I stopped in palmanova last year and I actually was pleasantly surprised how different Magaluf was from all the stories I’ve heard. We didn’t even go near the strip and had dinner in the Magaluf square and went to the nicer area around the innside hotel.

I’m far from complaining about this new rule all I’m saying is I’ve paid for 10 nights AI at this hotel, which was far from cheap I might add and it hasn’t been advertised as only 6 drinks a day. It’s been advertised as AI drinks from 11am til 8pm. And a good point was made is that AI drinks are usually very small so 6 drinks isn’t actually 6 drinks that you’d pay for at a bar.
By the sounds of it this new rule has been in the process for a couple of years so was wasn’t it announced and confirmed at the end of last season and put into effect then so people booking holidays in 2020 would’ve known about this.
I booked this holiday on the 24th of Jan, the same day the mallorca bulletin reported of this new AI law.
I don’t see how to be fair it will help as someone said above people will just drink in their rooms

It says AI alcoholic drinks served from 11am til 8pm. No mentions of a 6 drink limit.
My holiday provider has also told me that this law would’nt effect my holiday either

Anyone who needs more than 6 drinks a day, holiday or otherwise, probably should be using their time to take a long hard look at themselves instead of whining about this.
I guess people like to do different things with their holiday. Some people like to drink on holiday and let their hair down, others not so much. 6 drinks to some people is nothing.
If people don’t like drinking then they should just avoid these areas.
I’m hardly whining about drinking as I’d rather of just been able to go sc at this hotel but I couldn’t as it’s AI so I had to pay a lot of money to stay AI which wasn’t advertised with a drinking limit. As I’ve paid for what was advertised I should be offered regardless of whether I want to drink or not.

    Hmmm.
I guess they might say they are providing what they say they are as you can have your 6 drinks anytime between 11am and 8pm...? Slippery buggers, these holiday companies.
Which holiday company have you booked with and what is the hotel?
Have you done as requested by the hotel and sent them the email you had from the holiday company?

Do we know when this law is being implemented?
As you are not going until September, I guess there will be more publicity about this before you go.
Or are you considering cancelling and rebooking somewhere else?

Do you know where you read this regarding the top section you wrote?
I booked my holiday the 24th January which was the day the mallorca bulletin printed their story regarding the AI drinks limit. I’ve also been told by my travel provider that this law will not effect my AI
