  • Things weren't better when I was a teenager in the 1980s.  Mental health wasn't talked about, teachers were still permitted to use violence against children, there was no equal marriage, LBG people were far more marginalized than they are today (e.g. section 28), there were no rights for trans people and so on.  Go back further to the 1970s, before PACE, and we have abuses by the police like the Birmingham six and Guildford four.

Things are far from perfect now, but they are better than when I was younger.
Yeah but you say about teachers using violence, we didnt see it that way then did we? What I mean is if I did something wrong I probably deserved it, my father wouldn't hesitate to smack my !!!!!!, but it did me good, I knew right from wrong. Compared to an out of control generation we have now. Sorry but that's how I see it.

Schools is the one area where I totally agree with you. It is frightening what goes on in schools today. Breakdown of the family unit, and hence family values, has led to many pupils behaving in a feral way.
Drugs, alcohol abuse and general poor behaviour are far more prevalent in mainstream schools. This is one area in which successive governments have made changes that have not only been unsuccessful but also contributed to a slide in standards.

I also get worried with the direction our society is heading.

Not sure if this is even the correct section, but why is it when we reach a certain age,  presumably middle age,  I.E. 50 plus,  everything seems better in your past,  weather,  way of life,  society,  etc etc.
Because our memories are a flawed representation of the past. We only remember what we want to remember and we forget/gloss over many of the realities of the past. We emphasise the aspects of the past that "validate" our existence. For example, my FiL (who is 93) grew up pre WWII and thinks the British Empire was a wonderful thing and that Britain was much better when we were "great". It validates him as a person because he feels part of that "greatness" and for some reason he can't accept that GB is a much less important entity these days.

Thus for many people, things will always be better in the "past" simply because their memories have created a version of the "past" that fits their own biases and prejudices.

How old are you?  You are young enough to have a 4 year old child but you sound like Piers Morgan!

i don’t think any generation has ever been ‘out of control’.
I'm 50.  When I was at school the cane was still in use. It was phased out just after I left in 1985.
But there is a lot more antisocial behaviour going on now than there ever was.
There was a lot more respect for our elders when we were kids.
I was watching something on the tv a few nights ago and they said crime from women has doubled in the past 10 years.

No there isn’t, crime is down, we’ve never been safer.

You’re just being a typical reactionary old git!

I saw it as violence then and I still do.  It "did me good", but only in that it taught me early on that authority figures like teachers are not deserving of respect simply due to the position they hold.  My respect for those in positions of authority is by default nil nowadays unless I know them personally and know they are deserving of it.

Yeah but taking the power away to use the cane at school wasent violence, it was controled discipline.  And the problem is then it slowely got to a stage where its taken away from parents aswell.

I'm 40. I can see some great changes and some bad ones too. My teenager was watching a video the other day. The girl was demonstrating how to look older. I told my child wait 15 years and she will be doing videos on how to look younger! Be grateful for what we have. Avoid what we dont like and make changes rather than being dissatisfied.

I hope rather than nil, it’s actually ‘the same amount of respect as any other stranger’ because that shouldn’t be nil!

You're proving my point. You've taken one bit of evidence and immediately used it to support your bias without checking the facts or looking at the bigger picture. You remember the past as a "better place" and therefore will cherry pick data to support your bias. Don't worry, we all do it.

Many older people say that we should recapture the spirit of WWII, when Britain was "great" and "we were all in it together". A period in which reported crimes increased 57 percent (and I bet a lot of crimes were unreported). Clearly a lot of criminals weren't in it together!

Yeah but how often do you hear someone say,  my God if we talked to our parents like that we would have been leathered and put to bed with no supper. Especially in those days a bedroom simply had just that,  no gadgets not even a tv was allowed in my room.
But the thing is we learnt how to behave quicker.
All this naughty step stuff is rubbish because 5 minutes later their back miss behaving again.
Somehow we need to let control back to the parents,  and stop being governed by politics.
We have become far too PC.
