I put my practical side down to a 50s 60s childhood hb2. Mt dad left the navy after the war and retrained as a chef. Mum had been a confectioner so between the two I was cooking from scratch from a very early age. My mum was a knitter but loathed sewing. Didn't even like sewing a button on the cardigans she knitted. My youngest aunt was only 21 when I was born and she taught me to sew dad and the 2 grandads were avid gardeners and also had an allotment each so they took the little toddler and taught her to garden explaining the difference between a weed and a plant. I have vivid memiorie of toddling behind them with a bucket of worms and being told worms lived in the soil and not my bucket.I've always enjoyed crafts. Many years later when the toxic ex was around varous skills kept the roof over our heads and the food on the table. I started repurposing things and enjoyed it and knew we would survive whatever happened.I checked Elaines blog and it's live but no sign of all her wonderful previous posts. it's a shame because her posts changed many peoples lives. People learned the skills I was lucky to as a child. many peope had no idea how to plan and stick to a budget and she told them how. She started with 2 young children and no money and hoped to pay off her mortgage in three years. it took a bit longer but she got there. She used to post on MSE as Memory Girl and it was lovely to see how she triumphed over disaster. Now so many are facing difficult times it's sad all that hard won knowledge is lost.I hope you and yours are ok. The only positive i can find in the present situation is the face to face health assessments are suspended at the moment.Take carepollyx. It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Polly, thank you for your kind words. I do try and be 'useful' to someone else each day, whether that is providing a listening ear or something more practical. It might be just a small candle, but it is a start. It's not difficult!

Bless you maddie. I can at last stop boring those here and on OS with my moans about the shawl pattern. It's so good to know all those wonderful posts aren't lost.hb2 A listening ear or something practical is both useful and kind. I've always been aware people are either kind or the opposite. We're seeing the best and the worst of humanity more than ever in the present situation. All those clearing shops of things they already have loads of without a thought for those who actually need them and can't afford to buy ahead or are restricted by health or mobility problems are the lowest of the low in my opinion. We had a glorous sunny weekend here last week and they had to bring in both the police and coastguards to clear large crowds and close off car parks ignoring advice to stay away from the beach and other areas. It would be a lot easier to fight the spread of the virus if people would stop feeling they're entitled to do exactly as they want when they want. They're probably the type who'll fight over a tv in the shops on Black Friday.. Apart from not caring about others they're dragging their offspring in their wake setting a bad example and endangering their own families and communities. The "Because I'm worth it" mindset has done a lot of damage over the years. Let's thank our lucky stars we aren't those people.Small candles joined together send love, light and hope into the world. I light a candle every evening and I love earth day when the lights go out and millions of candles send out their light. That's why I changed my signature here a while ago. When times are tough I always think of Pandora's box when all else was gone there remained Hope and hope can get us through.pollyxxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Yes, at the weekend Bournemouth beach looked like a bank holiday
I haven't been down to see if car-parks are now closed but I suspect similar measures had to be taken.
Hopefully, the panic buying will ease off soon as people have 'stocked up' and will just buy what they need to maintain those levels. Or am I being hopelessly optimistic? It's not difficult!
