Ian Rankin was off my radar until dd1 brought one of his books here years ago and left it on the shelf in the hall for anyone interested. She ran the Scottish region for a number of years for a major bookseller and always got handed freebies. No idea why but she didn't like Ian and didn't even open the signed hardback just left it here. Dd read it , then me and we were both hooked. They're all on the bookshelf . We were delighted when the last two came out although Rebus was retired from the squad- until he got involved again. Since the one last year there still isn't any news of what was supposed to be the last one featuring John Rebus. No word either on the planned new tv episodes under Rankin and Stott.
I liked John Hannah in other dramas and films but he never seemed gritty or seedy enough to play Rebus.
Oddly enough dd1 disliked Terry Pratchett dd3 didn't talk to her for ages after hearing that. He did book events in her regions around the uk and she said although he did the signings and was nice to fans he was always happy to leave. In the end I pointed out he and Neil were longing for a burger and a pint and serving a Betty's afternoon tea in the Yorkshire region was never going to cut if.
Two fifers we just need Rankin and Elaine and maybe the lovely MP she worked with now.
pollyx.
Sadly the lovely MP lost his seat.
I thought he was really genuine.
Have you read Quintin Jardine?
His books feature a policeman called Skinner & I really really like his books.I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. I thought Stephen Gethins seemed a decent really nice guy so it's a shame to hear he's no longer an MP. I used to read the blog and think it a pity there weren't more like him.
I haven't heard of Quintin Jardine but will investigate. One of these days I'll probably suffer death by book when the floors collapse under the weight of the bookcases.
Just trying to persuade myself to head for bed. It's lovely and warm down here so hard to shift myself.
I'm hoping Ss is asleep now.

I promised to knit a few of those a few years ago and the pattern I bookmarked on the Dell was lost when the laptop finally gave up.

I will message Elaine I have her in my email and Facebook because I used to make the thermal bags and send her some of the profit.
At the moment I don't think I have the energy.
I am aching all over and DS version of getting the children ready etc has exasperated me.
Dgd and I and dgs2 are all unwell.
I have been drinking a lot of water. Don't have the energy to get out of bed to use the teasmade over in my cosy corner.
I can't remember if I have anyone booked in this morning and certainly don't have the strength to go down the garden to look in the diary! When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

Ss, I'm sorry that you are feeling so poorly, and that DS is being less use than a chocolate teapot (at least you could eat the chocolate!) The added problem, when you feel so rough, is that you don't have the energy to give him the kick up the arris that he needs/deserves
I don't like to say this, really don't want to 'put the boot in', but he is playing you for a fool :mad:It's not difficult!

Sadly I think unless you are on at your DS all the time he just won’t do what you need him to do sadly.

I eventually got a cup of tea and a bowl of porridge.
I have had no end of people coming to the door and messaging etc for work.
I have been sending them to the lady who used to work in the shop with me.
I am exhausted and I will going to have to turn the business phone off.
I am not sure I could pick up that £10 note! When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.1 -
SS, you worried that you could not cope with DGS 1 & 2 without the help and assistance of DS. It is only too obvious to us out here that not only does he not help, you are having to cope with DS in almost the same way as you have to cope with DGD - in other words, you now have 4 children to look after.
Set him loose - he is in his 20s, he has fathered two children and has never bothered to take on any of the responsibilities of adulthood, let alone fatherhood. I remember that you worried that you had been so busy with the twins that DS had bee ignored, and you felt guilty and that it was all your fault. IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT - just as the twins were growing up too fast, he just didn't want to be bothered to grow up.
Once he has gone, you will be fine. Just make sure that he goes by 1st March. You have learned to loose the twins - now loosen his ties.1 -
At times like this I and I'm sure others here wish we could come and make you a nice hot cup of tea and tell you to lie back and sleep.
Your hope that you and ds could help each other isn't working out. Feeling angry and let down isn't how you should be living it's just adding to an already heavy load and impacts on your health. You are going above and beyond to care for everyone but not getting support in return from ds.
I believe you could manage much better if he wasn't living with you. I know dgd has had lifts to school in the past from one of your friends. Better to pay towards fuel costs for a reliable lift. You'd be using your own fuel if you were taking her.
That would leave you free to take the boys in the other direction. I don't know if you've thought through yet how you could manage without him. Obviously when you need a bit of a break with proper funding you can have suitable help.
Reading your recent posts he's not even pretending to help now and you'll feel more hurt , frustrated and angry as time goes on.
Even dgd must now be aware of the situation wirh him so well done to her for cooking noodles to at least serve up something edible.
It sounds as though dgd and dgs2 are probably off school ill today so I hope you get some rest at some point.
I know you aren't usually this ill but it may be worth bringing the work diary into your room as you finish for the day. A message on your site can let people know you're ill.
Don't worry about contacting Elaine just think of getting better. I really hope you feel better soon. If it's anyrhing like we and many others have had it's horrible and takes time to run it's course.
I was talking the other day about getting back to cooking for the big freezer as it's always been a big help during busy times or illness to be able to heat a prepared meal.
Both of us have been craving Vegetarian Scotch Broth aka Gary Rhodes Soup in this house. It's filling and real comfort food. It involves a lor of vegetables and some barley but served with crusty hot buttered rolls it's a welcome return to eating again. I always keep some of the part baked rolls in both the cupboard and freezer.
Was it you making theThermal bags Elaine sold on her site? If I'd known I'd have bought one rather than making my own.
