Your actual account number (including dash) is to be entered in the Reference field.

The Branch that you opened the account should have given you a sort code and 'their' account number .. this is the one to enter as account number.

I'm in London for a few days this month and it occurred to me that it might be an opportunity to open one of these branch only regular savers like Kent Reliance or Saffron Walden. But sadly neither has a branch which is handy

The nearest Saffron BS branch to London is Brentwood which is only just outside London. It's on the train line from Liverpool Street.

Unfortunately Santander doesn't let you put a dash in the reference field either. I couldn't find a way round this and had to pay from a Nationwide account

Had no problems entering a dash in reference box when setting up standing order from Santander into Virginmoney branch regular saver.
May be worth trying again

I was beginning to doubt my sanity there, but I've had another go and the answer is.....

Santander won't let you use special characters for faster payments, but they will for standing orders!

£8.65 return to Brentwood, £7.85 to Ware. A bit over one month's interest, so definitely interesting! TY - and to tg99
