Apart from taking all your details, checking them against what they use to check them against, they are bound to suggest a will, estate planning, investment advice, a mortgage, a loan, house insurance and so on. Even though you will fend them off politely it does take time. There is also the off-subject chit-chat which if the interviewer is personable and pleasant is sure to draw you in.

That's what happened at the Nottingham on Wednesday anyway. Mine took the best part of an hour.

Plus with Virgin you may be told - in detail - what a Virgin lounge has to offer!

I was hoping to get close to the 5 mins in and out to open the Saffron reg saver account at their Ware branch but maybe a bit optimistic then! Though to be fair I did bring with me a completed application form.

How long did it take to open in branch? I've got an appointment booked for next week to open one and they have suggested it will take c45 minutes! Surely not!

This sounds right, they have lots of bits to read off an iPad, about the account if it suits you, and if you are aware of the benefits that come with being a customer. It wont be a quick im and outl, the advisors will have to be sure you have made your decision based on information provided, just like it offers when you open online not that it is read all the way through, in branch they have to tick off that you have read and understood the paperwork,

45mins seems just right, mine was just over an hour but I had to wait to be seen and we did go off tangent talking.

Free use of the coffee machine, which had tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, I was happy with a steaming mug of coffee, went down well with my croissant, pleasant chit chat while opening the account, and the chocolates was because I had never been to branch before, wasn't expecting that,

I just called into my local branch without an appointment. Luckily someone was available to see me straight away and I was out, passbook in hand, within 10 minutes. In fact my coffee was still too hot to drink when I left!

I suppose it could take longer if you don't have existing accounts with Virgin.

Plus I don't do chitchat

Am going to be disappointed if I don't get chocolates now then as also my first visit (London Haymarket). :)

I was just shown where the coffee making facilities were.

I might report him to his boss. That'll teach him. :(

I did notice another visitor who left that area with a cup of coffee and a plate heaped with biscuits.

I will maybe make a subtle hint before we begin that I'll need an energy boost in order to concentrate on all the terms and conditions....and since I don't drink coffee then it'll have to be the chocs. Else I'll just start a bit of small talk and mention that I've heard Virgin lounges do great chocs. :)

I did get them when the advisor returned to the room with my passbook and said these are for you as its your first visit to a branch, wasn't given at the start that was the coffee and croissant.
