You are NOT responsible for your mother. If you aren't there bunging her a few bob here and there, then she will have to stop spending money she hasn't got and wise up

Why do you even subsidise her to the extent you do ?

My generation, we left school, we got a job, and we moved out into bedsits or flat shares. Life wasn't always easy but we learned to grow up fast and we learned how to mange our own money pretty well. I had to keep down 3 jobs when I left home to keep on top of the bills and have a bit of a life but it wasn't forever and it beat handing over my wages for my dad to !!!! against the wall

This sounds like financial abuse to me. Your mum is putting pressure on you to take on her responsibilities with the consequences of either you or her becoming homeless if you don't. That's not fair. I'd see if you can seek advice from a local housing support service. Is there a YMCA near you? Even see if you can rent the cheapest room you can find and move on up from there. Staying in your current situation could permanently damage the relationship between you and your mum and the stress is damaging.
