Just incase any one is dithering you should know that npower has removed all its fixed/capped tariffs from today. I rang as I wanted to switch to npower one or to their offer which was on the web for existing customers to be fixed at 0% until march 09 but they have pulled both deals. I asked if they could do anything else but they said no so I have switched to Southern Electric dual fuel fixed discount 2010 online which gives fixed price until 31/7/2010. I was unable to do anything worthwhile on any of the switching companies.0

OK so now I'm really confused! I read Martin's emergency e-mail re: price rises of Gas and Electricity and went on the comparison sites. First of all each of the 3 sites advised me to switch to a different user than the others, and each site quoted different estimated costs per annual for each of the top 2 or 3 suppliers!
So I rang up my current supplier, Atlantic G & E (Online) to see if they did a capped rate. The don't but the girl pointed out that the Scottish Power capped rate (the top one suggested by the comparison sites) is 40% more than the normal rate! It also locks you in until Aug 09 and the small print syas that they can rasie the price (in exceptional circumstances - but they don't tell you what these are!)
She advised me to stay with Atlantic. I know this is to be expected, but how do I know if she's not right?
HELP I'M CONFUSED:rolleyes:

Found a flaw today while trying to change my gas/electricity supplier via u-switch and the offer of a case of wine. All the companies I tried wouldnt allow me to set up a direct debit because it is a joint account and need both parties to confirm. When ringing uswitch they said they could set up the direct debit with no problem but I wouldnt get the free wine offer.0

I have used Moneysupermarket, uswitch and energyhelpline. For the same info entered each one offered a different saving figure for the same supply WHY???0
-
I too have just switched but notice you do pay a fee of £43 for the wine, as I was quoted saving of £225.95 and annual bill 482.05 on Uswitch direct then saving of 184.56 and annual price of £523.44 via moneyexpert? Strange the annual amount varies too with the same supplier but then it is a saving!0

Hi All,
I'm new to posting but followed this website for quite a while and saved a bit. Noticed some comments about different quotes from different comparison sites, well i have just calculated a quote from energy helpline to go capped duel/fuel with scottish power against my old bill using price per kilowatt and the percentage increase was bang on. This whole issue of "Emergency cap now" has me in a dilemma. I have just changed from BG duel to seperate- Atlantic for Gas saved 12% and Scottish for elec saved 17%. If i go to Scottish power fixed (not capped????) i would now increase gas 53% and elec 23% total increase of 76% not very appealing as i am trying to save everywhere as like others who are struggling. Going to bed know so hope to read replies tomorrow.0 -

Sorry but I can't help with what to do about switching (I'm as confused as anyone) but, in terms of the increase you're looking at it won't be as bad as you've calculated at 76%. Please take this as me trying to be helpful - not picky - but I've seen a few people calculate combined increases like this and you are giving yourself more hearburn than necessary.
I can't calculate what your increase would be without knowing the proportion of your spend on gas and electricity but if (very unlikely) you spent the same on both the increase would be half way between 52% and 23% ie 37.5%.
Giving my rates as an example - I pay monthly about £50 for electricity and £30 for gas, so my electricity with a 23% increase would go up £11.50 to £61.50 and my gas with 53% by £15.60 to £45.60
My total monthly would therefore go up from £80 by £27.10 to £107.10. That's a percentage increase of 34% (divide 27.1 by 80 and multiply by 100)
Still not nice but 34% doesn't sound any where near as scary as 76%
Hope I'm not teaching any grannys to suck eggs;)0 -
Martin says the caps are from 1 - 4 years but I can only find those to 2009 on the comparison sites?
Oh Ive panicked and signed up with Scottish Power on their capped rate til August 2009. Will now sort out the woodburning stove to use the following winter.0 -
I was about to cap gas & electricity when a thought struck me. I'm currently living in a 3 bed house which is up for sale and we are looking to move to a 1 bed flat.
Would a capped rate mean we would be paying the same price even when we move to a much smaller property? Do they calculate the rates on current useage- obviously we will use a lot less when we move to our smaller home. Is the capped rate the same price per month or per unit?0
