Hi all, I'm sorry if I am posting on the wrong thread but it seems everyone is all over the shop with this capping panic.
I have never changed energy suppliers ( I know it's a mortal sin:o), so I decided to look into it all since Martin seems to be waving a red flag at us all.
It's not quite as simple as it seems with lots of the comparison sites giving differing amounts for what is all in all the same products:confused:
I have spent most of the morning trawling through it all and have come up with a few figures and I just need some assurance that what I am thinking of doing is the best way to go.
    Here's the figures...
Best prices were found through Energyline.
    Present total annual spend £1,272.
Electricity, Present supplier Scottish power...£648 per annum.
Proposed supplier British Gas......£512 per annum.
    Annual saving £136

Gas, Present supplier Scottish gas.........£642 per annum.
Proposed supplier N Power..........£539 per annum.
    Annual saving £85.

That would give me an annual saving of £221 per annum.

Dual fuel from British gas £1,070. saving £202.

I checked the capped rates and of course could only find them for dual fuel and the cheapest one would increase my annual fuel bill by £140, taking my annual fuel bill to a £1,412.
Now I am not the brightest spark in the fire but I am wondering if it's really worth my while going down the capping route?
Could one of you guys please have a wee looksee at my numbers and give your opinion?

  • Hi all,

Following the advice on this website, I went to moneysupermarket.com yesterday and applied for the capped dual-fuel deal with British Gas. I've just noticed that BG have today hiked their prices. I applied for the capped rate yesterday (and have an acknowledgement email from moneysupermarket.com), so does anyone know whether I'll definitely get the old rate, or will I now have to pay the hiked rate?

    Thanks,
    Jon.

OK so now I'm really confused! I read Martin's emergency e-mail re: price rises of Gas and Electricity and went on the comparison sites. First of all each of the 3 sites advised me to switch to a different user than the others, and each site quoted different estimated costs per annual for each of the top 2 or 3 suppliers!

So I rang up my current supplier, Atlantic G & E (Online) to see if they did a capped rate. The don't but the girl pointed out that the Scottish Power capped rate (the top one suggested by the comparison sites) is 40% more than the normal rate! It also locks you in until Aug 09 and the small print syas that they can rasie the price (in exceptional circumstances - but they don't tell you what these are!)

She advised me to stay with Atlantic. I know this is to be expected, but how do I know if she's not right?

    HELP I'M CONFUSED

First check if the comparison sites are quoting accurate figures, I am very deubious with these now, I know in my case they had atlantic 'overpriced' meaning the increases are actually udner estimated, that 40% may be a lot more.
  • Reading all these threads, I have decided on my plan of action! I shall start knitting a VERY warm real wool jumper and socks. I shall buy some ski clothing and snow boots, ear muffs and warm gloves and hat ready for the winter. Not too sure what to wear when I go out though!!! :(

the comparison website states that if I go capped with the same company I am with until October 2009, I will save - £201. I don't know with the price hikes coming whether that means I will save any money or end up spending £200 more.

Maths was never my strongest point. What inflation is expected in the new year?

I'm trying to work it out, but wondering whether to leave it. If I phone up Eon and ask them whether it is worth me going to capped, are they likely to give me an unbiased view for my account?

Well that sounds completely wrong, a capped tariff on the same supplier as you on now should be higher priced not lower, and they cant possibly estimate savings as they dont know what increases there will be and when.

So the only conclusion I can come to is they have got your current tariff wrong which comes to no surprise to me, check the unit rates on your last bill and compare to the unit rates on the comparison, those are raw figures and not estimates.

another one confused here! have just price fixed my uncles gas and elec with Bgas until december next year, but don't know what to do with my own!!

been with edf for about 3 years on v3 online - cheapest tarriff at the time and no longer available, Even with the price increase, it is cheaper than their fixed rate, so we could probably take another hike in prices that is predicted before it works out cheaper on the fixed rate.

Today seems to be everyones cut off date for capping, so do people think it is worth doing?? thanks!

Hi Jon, I also registered yesterday for the same deal with moneysupermarket.com but felt a little uneasy so I also contacted British Gas direct and secured the deal.
Following today's price hikes I phoned BG again and they confirmed that the deal had been done at yesterday's prices and not today's.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi
We are first time buyers and have yet to receive our first leccy and gas bill. I can't compare as I don't have a value to enter into the comparison sites. Any ideas on the best thing to do? Currently with NPower.
