Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

Just wondered if anyone had tried calling up their existing energy provider and asking if they would "price-match" another provider (i.e. those coming up on the comparison sites) to retain your custom?
It happens for mobile phone customers, so what about energy customers? Is this just not current industry practice or is there something preventing it?0 -
We'd only just made our 1st payment to EDF after switching to them earlier in the year, they were cheapest at the time. And here we go again.
Did a moneysupermarket comparison last night, but they didn't have EDF's new rates, so had to do a manual comparison against their best buy capped rate. Scottish Power came out on top for dual fuel.
Top Tip - Quidco cashback are offering £62 cashback for a new signup with Scottish Power dual fuel. Grab it while you can. :T0 -
Hi Everyone.
Having received Martin's email, and seen the news, I dug in and found that my potential price hike with Sainsbury Energy (EDF) would be huge cos I'm on the 2008 price protect. So I went to find out when this expires....answer is 30 Sep 2008. So anyone on that 2008 plan should check - If I do nothing then the transition from 2008 protect to standard tarfiff sees a 50% increase in my gas and 40% for electric.
So yes.....time to switch!! EON have a 1 Oct 2009 price protect with TESCO Clubcard points tie-in, and cashback with energyhelpline. A bit more expensive in the very short term, but still cheaper than if I stay with EDF.

Isn't Sainsbury's Energy part of Scottish Power?0 -
So I've used this sites excellent advice for a number of years.
My current spend on gas & electricity is £820 per year
Going to cheapest capped/fixed option will take it to £1,127 £307 extra, an increase of 37%
"...predicting rises of up to 60% over the next year" Okay - not disputing that but it's going against the MSE grain a little to leap into paying more NOW based on let’s be honest, speculation.
So what to do? No doubt the capped/fixed deals will demise but isn't it against the MSE mantra to move in my position?
Maybe I'm just confused...
I have the same issue as Wonko.
The comparison engines tell me that to switch from scottish Power to npower will save me £674 per annum and cost just under £1500 per annum for gas and electricity. The capped rate they are recommending is with my current supplier and will only cap for 1 year (most of them seem to only be for a year or 16 months or so) and will cost £2053 per annum (i.e approx 35% more than npower current prices). I actually think the price checkers have a bug as the figures they provide do not add up properly!!
But what to do. Even if npower raise their prices now by 17% and then again in 6 months time, I will be much better off to switch to npower than to cap.
Difficult times!!To infinity and beyond!0 -
Hi i have just recieved the email from martin about switching to a capped rate.
What i was putting out for an answer is the fact that as the price of oil is dropping rapidly, how is it worth capping heating prices?
Anyone got any answers as its all above me?
Cheers for any replies?

I was with EON online and felt I had a good rate. However, following Martins advice I capped today with Scottish Power until August 2009, which is approx £130 p/a more expensive. My thoughts are that at just over £10 p/m I can budget. If the other company's don't follow with price rises in the next few weeks I will cancel the switch using the cooling off clause. In addition I went through Quidco and got £62 cashback!:T

Ours is a very similar situation to yours. I switched to Scottish Power last night, via Quidco. I'm happy to go through the winter knowing our bill wont be a lot more expensive and will review it in August next year. I'm still going to be a lot more cautious with the heating this winter as I'm quite shocked at how much our winter bills cost!

I've done exactly the same as you! I switched from Southern Electric to the Scottish Power online no standing charge fixed to August 2009... and got myself £62 from Quidco in the process. Wonder how long they will keep this fixed price?
AND.....i also want to open up the fireplace this winter. We usually heat the whole house even though we just stay in the lounge most of the time!

nPower have removed their capped tariffs when I rang to cap at 10 am..
They told me that no capped tariffs or alternatives were available..:mad:0 -
Hello,
I have just received Martins email re switching. I immediately phoned my present supplier and asked what they could do for me to stop me from switching. I am on pension credits.
As a consequence they offered the following rates after various discounts:
7% increase on my gas tariff.
2% increase on my electricity tariff.
I feel this is quite reasonable as they have promised to put this in writing.
Would appreciate any comments.
