Next round is begining...... Below is an extract from an internal email from EDF
We have today announced an increase to our retail energy prices of 17% for electricity and 22% for gas, effective immediately. It is a decision we have taken after much analysis and evaluation of the options.
World energy demand and high oil prices are increasing the wholesale cost of energy. Since our last price increase in January 2008, the wholesale cost of coal has increased by 70%, gas by 63% and electricity by 47%. With these input cost rises, we can no longer avoid a price increase.
We know these changes will hit hard, particularly during these tough times. Previously, we had the lowest price changes of all our competitors, increasing by 7.9% for electricity and 12.9% for gas. Competitors implemented much higher increases, with British Gas, for example, increasing by 15% on both fuels, and nPower raising their prices by 13% for electricity and 19.4% for gas.
It’s worth highlighting that around 750,000 residential customers on our existing fixed price products and 130,000 Small and Medium Enterprise customers on fixed contracts will not be affected by this increase. Our new ‘Price Protection 2009’ product launching today will enable further customers looking for budgeting certainty and protection from possible future price increases to fix their prices until October 2009.
We must remember that we were the first energy company to launch a social tariff for our most in need customers, offering a 15% discount to our retail prices. Energy Assist is now being extended significantly to reach 100,000 customers – 50% more than the existing number on this tariff. We were also the first company to align Prepayment electricity prices with our credit prices.
We’re actively helping our customers improve their energy efficiency, save money and reduce carbon emissions. We provide access to a dedicated team offering free energy efficiency advice, and a host of other measures. EDF Energy will spend £75 million this year on energy efficiency measures; £54 million of which is targeted at vulnerable customers. To date, we have improved the homes of around 160,000 customers, who have not only seen their carbon footprint reducing, but their energy bills as well.
We are counting on you all to explain the background to and need for this price rise to your colleagues, family and friends. So please take advantage of the further information that is available on the intranet pages.

Hi there, new to this, but my questions is this. Can you transfer from one cap to another when ours ends in jan 2009??

Hi
I'd like to take Martin's advice and switch to a capped tariff. But I'm also keen to start using a Green tariff - are there any that are BOTH Green AND Capped at a reasonable level? I live in North London.
thankyou

I would like to see a capped online tariff! At the moment I am with EDF (Online tariff 5.1) but been unable to find out if there have been any price hikes with the EDF Online 5.1.
There is no mention on EDF website of rises online prices rises and the website does not even prices for online tariffs!
I am hoping this means that the online tariff prices have remained the same!0 -
I am due to move into a rented flat which has a new gas supply - therefore no history of gas consumption for the premises. How do I find the best/cheapest supplier when I have nothing to compare it to? The electricity, I believe, is with TXU Energy but when I look at the comparison sites for electricity this company is not on the list? Confused... I would also like to get a capped rate at this time.0

Please help! I'm trying to cap my tariff but I'm so confused!!
I'm currently with the green tariff with ScottishPower paying about £755 per year apparently. When I've put in all my details on energyhelpline, it offers me a few capped ones with ties ins and one with Eon which is £170 pa (23%) higher!
Is it sensible for me to go for this one??Premier League Baby!0 -
I hadn't realised it had been 15 months since i switchd us from Eon to Npower. Back in April 07 we got it down to £72pm, it went up 9 months ago to £96 so not too bad. Having chosen paperless billing i've laxed off and hadn't kept tabs, anyway having just done so i'm now £325 in debit so am slightly shocked by the figures. Can these be accurate readings?
02-08-2007 actual N&D
31-10-2007 actual N&D
Night = 1258kWh
Day = 1464 kWh
09-01-2008 Estimate N&D
07-04-2008 Actual N&D
Night = 6795kWh
Day = 2493 kWh
If anything i have been concious over our electricity usage and have replaced every bulb with energy efficiant ones, turned the boiler to heat water half the time it was on last year and we have replaced the back door that was drafting.
i really want to get on a capped plan and can save £300 with B.gas capped until 31-12-2009 but am now worried about the £326 debit. Any suggestions?0 -
I am on a gas and electric payment meter, so I have to load money onto each payment card. I am with E-on and I currently owe them some debt of around £200, so a percentage is taken off each time I put some money on the cards. So because i still owe E-on this money and use a payment meter, does this mean I cannot CAP my energy prices or change providers?0

I was with EON online and felt I had a good rate. However, following Martins advice I capped today with Scottish Power until August 2009, which is approx £130 p/a more expensive. My thoughts are that at just over £10 p/m I can budget. If the other company's don't follow with price rises in the next few weeks I will cancel the switch using the cooling off clause. In addition I went through Quidco and got £62 cashback!:T0
