Hi there we've just switched from EDF to Scottish Power and decided to cap it until August 09 although this was £200 more expensive than if we'd switched to British Gas (uncapped)..I said to my other half before we do it let's see if Scottish power come up on Quidco - which they did promising about £72 cash-back - however their price was about £100 more than the price on USwitch which we have used to do the change. Were we doing something wrong on the quidco site - or could this be a warning not to assume that the price you get on quidco is always the best even taking into account the cash-back?

    Hi,

first time I have used this forum, so not sure if I am in the right place.
I heard Martin on radio 2 yesterday urging us to switch to capped tariffs for our energy. I am a very low user of both gas & electricity (£120 & £95) for the last 12 mth. I went onto moneysupermarket.com site. The best result came out for Scottish Power. I read some of the feed back and it is pretty damning. Can anyone tell me what is the best capped tariff and supplier for someone like myself with such a small usage.
    Thanks in advance.

    Andy.

Following Martin's advice, I switched both my gas and electricity to npower in May. After a year I will get £80 cashback. Is it worth me switching again so soon? Energyhelpline ranks Scottish Power top for my usage for both electricity and gas.

Have been with Scottish Power for both gas and electricty for some years and thus far never a problem. Switched to their "fixed price tarriff" some months ago - again no problems. ... unlike previous suppliers...

Hey folks, I switched to Scottish Power in September last year.

I've calculated my yearly energy usage based on the 254 days I've been billed so far, and putting these into energyhelpline every deal I could switch too will increase my spend, and the best capped deal is 50% worse!!

What should I do? Martin's emergency bulletin has scared me I don't want to lose hundreds of my hard earned moneysavings...

well I had another look at the price comparison sites following martin's latest email. I am disgusted with the comparison sites.

1 - They had 2 suppliers cheaper than my current supplier, one of them 12% cheaper, so checked out the prices. Then I got out my latest bill and O_o my current prices are cheaper so seems they are comparing to something that is not the right tariff for my current supplier, so as when I last checked I have the current cheapest supplier. Now moving on.

2 - martin advises to move to a fixed price supplier because of a further 20% increase this year and a 60% increase next year so 80% increase in next 18 months. Only one problem, british gas is the only supplier in my area offering capped and its a whopping 170% more expensive. 26p per unit electic (currently pay 10p) and 6p per unit gas (currently pay 2p). So for that to pay off the price increases would have to be absolutely massive as the capped price plan is a loser for the period before the prices do increase. Not to forget I would be tied in until 2010.

So for me is a no deal im afraid, I hope the figures are more favourable for others and this is a warning sign to others, check your latest bill as the comparison sites may not be checking accurately.
  • I'm on economy 7 with E-on because my building used to have storage heaters-it doesn't anymore so i'm wondering if i could get a better deal. Is it possible to switch when you're on e-7 as the u-switch website doesn't seem to like comparing it so much.

Anyone managed to do this successfully???

I just used SP's site to get a quote and it came back with £576.72 but when I checked their unit prices in their Fixed Price pdf, which quotes prices effective from 2nd June and which I presume is up to date, they were different and when I calculated the figure myself it came to £581.41.

This was for Fixed Price Energy 2009 Online No Standing Charge by the way.

Not much different I know, but I'm still not sure which of the figures are accurate from SP's site.
