the one reason you would want to shift is you may be able to lock in to a cheaper price for a longer period of time, it just depends whether it is worthwhile - which all depends on your usage....

To check this first you need to find out if there are any exit penalty charges for leaving your current supplier, then second, use one of the comparison sites here...

to see whether any of the other fixes are cheaper than the one you're on, factoring in the exit penalty charges (if there are any)

of course if the newer fixes are more expensive, you might want to stick with what you've got for now, and then use the comparison sites again when it's nearer the end of your current fix

    hope that helps

    thanks rhyski,

we dont have any exit penalties and im sure the only two options that were cheaper when we looked on the comparison sites were only fixed for 3 months unless i misunderstood, maybe your right to just stay put till next year :(

the only other consideration is that you might want to switch to a new much longer fixed-rate if it's not that much of an increase in price from what you're currently paying, to prevent your bills from potentially jumping up at the end of June 2013 - though if you have to pay more now it might not work out cost effective
  • hi there im happy with my supplier of gas electricty but thought id have a look on comparison site see if im paying too much.I had my elec and gas usage in kwh for year put them in site, it then asked who i was with ?why i need tell them its working out cheapest, anyway it had had selected eon so i proceeded it told me my yearly cost with eon is £1500 pounds based on my readings. It told me i could save up to 300 pounds by switching great.TROUBLE IS im not with eon im with coop and pay £900 pounds year so why didnt it tell me that was the cheapest no mention of it .If anyone wants to change do what i did find out your kwh usage then ask the company the unit price of gas elec work it out yourself then you will save.

This is the problem, I find. The only true way of comparing is knowing the actual unit costs but so often they muddy the water by charging a different tarif after a certain level of consumption. The first thing energy regulators should do is get rid of this practice. Even if we then pay a standard charge - imo it would be easier to compare.
  • i pay a standard charge with the coop and there is just one unit price plus i have no price rise this winter they have said on there web site, plus they have never tied me in.WHY would a company want to tie you in contract if they are giving you a fare price for your energy

Now you know why you have to inform the comparison site ;)

    From Co-op website:
In fact we’ve committed to freeze our prices until at least April 2013
    http://www.cooperativeenergy.coop/2012/10/12/comment-from-co-operative-energy-on-british-gas-price-rises/

So expect a price rise beginning of May 2013 ;)

My supplier has guaranteed not to raise my prices this winter, nor next winter ... and I am not tied into them either :)

Also, if as claimed on the co-op website, the customers own the business, how much is your holding worth and how can you go about selling it?

    Edit:
Formed in 2010 and wholly owned by The Midcounties Co-operative, which is a consumer co-operative society entirely owned by its members. Membership is open to all customers.

    http://www.cooperativeenergy.coop/why-us/why-we-are-different/

But 'membership' is open to any other plc supplier too, and you don't even need to be a customer ;)

I've just switched to Scottish Powes capped duel fuel product. It was cheaper than my existing supplier (Powergen online dual fuel), it's capped and Quidco offer £61 cashback

EDF Blue+, they were coming up cheapest for me for a fixed tariff when I consulted a couple of comparison sites.
The unit prices are irrelevant, the total annual cost which the comparison sites provide is the important number. :)
If you used a comparison site, you should have noted that details of all the tariffs are included thereon ;)
