We are with NPower at the moment on the Go Fix 10 until April 2013.
In light of the current situation, I phoned them up and asked if they had anything better to offer. Their system is down due to the price changes but I was told about Price Protector 2014 - fixed to 01/03/14.
Tariff is: Standing charge 9.98p
Unit cost 15.73p/kwh
On the comparison sites, OVO has come out top giviing me a savings of 13% on my current Go Fix 10 until Nov 2013.
Tariff is: Standing charge 23.01p
Unit cost 10.07p/kwh
On an average usage of 500 units per month, my calculations say that OVO is cheaper, much cheaper.
Is my maths wrong??
Should I wait until Monday to see what is happening on the comparison sites? I am worried that the OVO might disappear overnight.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?
Many thanks,

Price Protector 2014
= (365*0.0998)+(12*500*0.1573) = £980.23
OVO
= (365*0.2301)+(12*500*0.1007) = £688.19Stompa0 -
Many thanks, Stompa
"No, assuming your figures are correct (and there are no additional discounts etc.) then OVO works out almost £300 cheaper p.a."
Yes, that is what I worked out but doubted my ability to spot the pitfalls.
Meantime, I have just run a quote with Scottish Power - they have an Online Fixed until April 2014. It works out at £10 per month more that OVO but .... 2014!
How I wish that I had the gift of foresight!0 -
I wonder if someone can help me as I always have the same problem when switching.
I am currently on Eon's Saveonline 10 plan which runs out at the end of November. I'm looking to switch and when I choose who to switch to I'll call them to see if I can coordinate moving as my plan expires.
BUT - the problem I always have is that the comparison sites don't use the right figures. How can I know I'm changing to a better tariff if they don't have my current charges correct? In the past I've had to trawl through each tariff, checking their kwh charges and calculating it all, but it takes me hours - so much for a quick switch.
Surely I can't be the only on that this happens to? Or am I missing something really obvious?
Many thanks

Martin's article needs to be updated. Energy Helpline now only pay £15 for a duel fuel switch. Unfortunately I didn't realise until I'd done it.0

Hi All
we are currently with EDF on there standard dual fuel tariff.
Looking to change as worried about the hikes.
Any advice on whether should go for fixed, length of fix etc etc. Minded to fix to 2012 with 1st utility.
Not got much time over the weekend to do, quickly done all the comparisons sites that Martin mentioned but there are so many choices it is mind boggling!
Any advice gratefully received, thanks.0 -

my provider is Npower (Standard tarriff). I do not know if there are any exit fees. I am considering switching to First Utility iSave Fixed v4 March 2014 one but not sure what info should be taken into account? Could someone please help?

I am in the process of switching from NPower to Scottish Power.
I had a look at an old bill and saw that I was in credit with NPower around £200.
How can I claim that back?
Thanks0 -
Well, I've just changed to first utility from Eon. I saw Martin on This Morning today and he was recommending switching to a fixed product. He also said it was a job to be done today and not left until the weekend. I was a bit worried about the price hikes and when I looked on the Eon site the maximum fixed period was one year.
The new deal is not that much cheaper by £41 but it is fixed until March, 2014 so that will give us some protection and I suppose will have to see what's on offer either before or at that time. Its getting scary. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
