I've just been on the comparison sites and it seems I can get a variable dual tariff with a company called Spark which, even with an 8% price rise (should they levy one) beats any other deal and will still be cheaper than any fixed rate deal over the next 17 months. Has anyone heard of them / used them?

Yes. MSE Forum Team have posted comments from this supplier on this board. (They are not considered big enough to have their own rep. to post here)

We are with NPower at the moment on the Go Fix 10 until April 2013.

In light of the current situation, I phoned them up and asked if they had anything better to offer. Their system is down due to the price changes but I was told about Price Protector 2014 - fixed to 01/03/14.

    Tariff is: Standing charge 9.98p
    Unit cost 15.73p/kwh

On the comparison sites, OVO has come out top giviing me a savings of 13% on my current Go Fix 10 until Nov 2013.

    Tariff is: Standing charge 23.01p
    Unit cost 10.07p/kwh

On an average usage of 500 units per month, my calculations say that OVO is cheaper, much cheaper.

    Is my maths wrong??

Should I wait until Monday to see what is happening on the comparison sites? I am worried that the OVO might disappear overnight.
  • Thanks to the tip I have just switched my electric and gas suppliers using the energy helpline .com site. Web site slow so rang them and was a promised a call back. Got one within minutes - from an Indian call centre! Odd when the web site clearly states UK based call centres.

To answer my own question - I've looked at the reviews and they're terrible! I won't be using them.

No, they can't change the tariff for the period it is fixed.*

Any comparison site will allow you to easily compare :)

*ScottishPower will meet the Offer Product fixed price guarantee
unless it is prevented from doing so by the actions or requirements
of any governmental, statutory or licensing authority.

Not in our case, comparison sites get it wrong if you don't know or understand what the results mean.

Energylinx which I think is also used by confused.com did not put our switch through even though they emailed confirmation so we lost a good deal, then they re-quoted using the wrong unit rates but saying we would have a saving, in fact we would have paid more and been locked in! Don't trust them at all.. check very detail before you sign or agree to anything...
Makes the world go around eh...
  • My Npower sign online 23 deal comes to an end on 6 November 2012.

I'm hoping to get a fixed deal and looking at the comparison sites First Utility offer the best deal which takes 4-6 weeks to change to.

If I apply to change today, i.e before the 6 November, will I be charged £40 cancellation fee by Npower or will the cancellation date be the date the supply is changed in 4-6 weeks?

I think that depends on the energy supplier your leaving and the cooling off period the new supplier offers. most transfers take 4 to 6 weeks. when you sign up with the new supplier they will only initiate the transfer at the end of the cooling off period. Its then up to the old supplier when the receive the Loss Notification whether you have breached the fixed contract and are subject to the early exit fees.
IMHO opinion i think it is better to wait until a couple of weeks before your contract ends before initiating a switch as this is the usual cooling off period so the old energy supplier does not receive the Loss notice until the end of your contract and make sure you contact your old supplier at the end of your contract to switch to a tariff that does not have any exit fees.
Of course that can also mean the tariff you wanted has been withdrawn from sale by the time you get around to sign up for the new tariff

    1. You'll both need to call British Gas and get the other person included on each account
(or otherwise each switch accounts separately, thereby missing out on potentially lucrative dual fuel discounts, or suppliers that won't consider gas only supply)
    2. You will be fully covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee offered by your bank should you have any issue with the Direct Debit Scheme :)
(which is unlikely - I don't know what stories you've been listening to)

Ok I did not think we had to ring BG to cancel, I thought the companies just took it over when you switched.

The second point was to do with two companies charging me, I can't set a new DD up until I have cancel my old supplier yet that's what was the new supplier was asking when I went to switch online yesterday.

Sorry its all a bit confusing to me
