I've changed from Economy 7 to standard rate in the past and found there was no need to actually change the meter as they can just charge for both normal and E7 units at the standard rate.

It seems like it's not worth the hassle of getting the meter changed and it leaves you with the option of going back to E7 if you want in the future.

Is common with some suppliers, but not others. Some insist on changing the meter (often free of charge) as their billing systems just can't cope with addin the readings together.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

The real scandal, I understand, is that the modern electronic meters don't work backwards; thus making it more expensive and difficult for "greenies" who want to generate their own electricity German style.

There is also the prospect that EDF (Electricity de France) will be taking over our atomic power stations that generate most of the "economy 7" electricity.

I would think that EDF is probably the world's most successful operator of nuclear power; so watch this space.

Not sure about this but I would imagine it would be easy to meter either with a seperate meter or a modifed meter. I would have thought that the micro-generation tarrifs are already geared up for this issue.

    Hi

I called npower yesterday (Tusday 13th) enquiring about a fixed tariff. Was told I could fix the price for a year with no increase or fix it til 2011 with a 7% increase (the article says the cheapest is around 10%) so I thought I'd mention that npower aren't all bad.

  • I am going to switch energy suppliers as I never have before, but I'm wanting to move within a year, would a fixed rate be silly as prices when I move may be different/better with a diff. company? Is it the house that is fixed, or me personally?
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!
  • Hi, Is that 7% increase per year until 2011?

I read it as a 7% increase on current rates, fixed from now until 2011.

I was on the phone to npower yesterday about the same thing, and that is right. You will pay more than you are paying right now, but that rate is fixed with no further increase until Jan 1st 2011. There is also a version which fixes your prices until (I think) October 2009.

However, you should be aware that if you are currently on a 'Sign Online' tariff, you can't have that capped. You need to change to their standard tariff which is more expensive. In that case I think it works out more like 10% difference.

NB: When I switched to npower, a month or so ago, I signed up to their Sign Online 10 tariff. In the last few weeks they brought in a new tariff called Sign Online 11. It has some cheaper and some more expensive elements, but works out better for me overall. It might be worth investigating if you're in the mood for a bit of number juggling.

If you want to change tariffs, just phone them up with meter readings and they will change you over, effective from the day you call.

I am intending to change to a capped tariff, but I'm leaving it a bit longer, to maximise the saving from my current online tariff. I hope I manage to time it right. The thought of missing the boat and being caught by huge price rises is making me a little nervous!
