eaustin - on the e-on site at the moment, it states "
We're cheaper than British Gas
Our EnergyGuarantee offer is cheaper than British Gas until 1 June 2009. Guaranteed! "
Moneysupermarket also states British Gas is cheaper for me - but Uswitch and energyhelpline say e-on - and when I look at e-on's website, the prices on the other two are correct, so don't panic, I think you are probably ok!
Edited to add: Actually, I'm not sure how true this is! It seems to be for a specific tariff, which seems to be more expensive than the standard? It looks good on screen, but maybe its not what it seems....I switched to e-on on the 15 February using moneysupermarket.com
I'm happy with the switch however I've heard nothing about my £30 from moneysupermarket.com. Having had a quick read it seems I maybe shouldn't be surprised.
What is my best course of action?0 -
Maybe I am suffering from a senior moment but I thought that the object of price capped tarriffs was to prevent the cost of gas rising above a certain limit. When British Gas introduced their Dual-Fuel Price Cap scheme, when prices were capped until 2010, my bills were quite manageable. We were assured that if the price of fuel rose, then we would begin to see benefits right away, as our fuel price would remain at the level we were currently paying. At the time, I was home a lot of the time, so the fuel bills were quite high. Since that time we have indulged in severe economies, and our energy usage has dropped around 40%. I would expect to see this reflected in the amount we pay - it certainly shows up on the amount of units consumed.
So, my question is, if the price is capped, and the energy used is less, then why have we seen an increase in fuel bills? We are not talking small amounts either - our monthly charge for gas alone has risen from £28.00 to £56.00, yet we are using 40% less gas!
Maybe someone could explain this for me - or was the price capping policy misrepresented?0 -

Has your payments been based on actual readings taken by yourself or estimated/BG "actual" readings?
If you have been on the latter for a while you could have been under-paying for your actual usage.
If you have just had the latter, they could have over-estimated your usage/projected usage for the year.

MPI have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

All bills from BG have been estimated by them, but we always check the reading, and if there is a discrepency, we telephone them and they send an amended bill. The usage is based on records of meter readings, and repesents the actual amount of gas used as recorded by the meter...0

Another thought that just occured to me - when Scottich Power introduced their fixed price 2011 tarrif, the price fix was slightly above (certainly not 40% though) their standard tarrif IIRC.
Do you have a breakdown of usage and prices before and after the capped price came into effect (including standing charges or tier 1 and 2 rates)?

Just to update that my switch to E.On (from EDF) has gone perfectly - Quidco gave me the £55 pretty quickly and we're enjoying great customer service and easy online account management - finally I can breathe as was so worried! Over time we hope to see some good savings...MFW #185

Be aware that I switched my electricity supplier with uswitch and received the an email with the £40 wine voucher attached the very next day.
Great I thought...however trying to use it is not quite so simple. Expected to use the voucher simply for a free case of wine, not so. You have to spend £79.99 pluss £5.99 carriage to get a discount of £40! Not what the offer stated and wish that I had switched with moneysupermarket for the £30 cash! Not very happy at all despite me speaking with Virgin Wine cusomer service department for nearly an hour trying to sort it out and explain how the offer was portrayed. That of a free case of wine in exchange for the voucher. Absolute rip off!
Absolutely - I made the same mistake. You also have to sign up to the "Wine Bank" which says you have to pay a monthly amount towards future purchases. So the wine costs you £50 for 12 bottles. You can easily get this from a supermarket and the same quality. The £30 cashback must be better. Is Martin aware of this because it is misleading.

I think I'm going to switch from EON Energy Online Extra Saver 6 (Dual Fuel) to Scottish Power's Capped until 2011 plan.
It'll be about £30pa more expensive at current rates but hopefully I'll be quids in once all the price rises in the next few years are taken into account.
I'll get £72 from Quidco for switching as well, which will be nice (although I expect I'll have to use most of that to settle my account with EON).0 -
I switched my dual fuel through Moneysupermarket.com to qualify for the £30 cashback. I accessed this site through Quidco. For doing this I received £20 cashback. Moneysupermarket are now saying that because I went through a cashback website they will not pay me the £30 cashback. Has anyone else experienced this?0
