I need to sort out my gas and electric supply soon. I am presently with Npower for both, but I can't seem to find details of the capped schemes on offer. I currently pay quarterly, as I prefer to time when the money comes out of my account. I would prefer to carry on with this but it seems like it is the more expensive way to pay. I did change providers once, but it was years ago. I don't know who is supposedly ok and who isnt.
:hello:  please play nicely children !

Further to my previous post this just gets better and better. I have now managed to sign up for paperless billing and i get a confirmation e-mail which has the password asterisk'd out but shows the first and last letter !!!!! I have never seen anyone else do this and i consider it to be a serious mistake by BG. Lets give any potential hackers a few clues to help them guess my password.

If you are lucky, they might get confused and pay your bill.
Seriously Daz, if you put a couple of numbers into your passwords somewhere, it is most unlikely anyone will bother to try and break it, unless perhaps it is your bank account.

It really depends on how easy the word is to identify after giving the first and last letters. If your password is dyifvcxe (how did I guess?;)) then putting d and e won't help anyone.

Okay, so if I switch to a fixed rate tariff, I will be paying more than my current bills. Presumably when the normal tariff goes up, I should make more savings to allow for the increase at the present time ? (If that is the case, roll on price increase!!!).

BTW Does the cashback come through automatically ?
Thank you for reading this message.
  • Hi,
I will be moving to a new house at the start of July, is it worth me establishing my Gas / Elec supplier for my new house on a capped rate now or will I not be able to do that?
    Any help appreciated,
    Thanks

Anyway, I think I'm on EON EnergyOnline Extra Saver v4 (would be nice if they'd print it on their bills!), which according to two of the comparison sites (I can't even get past the first screen on Energyhelpine 'cos it says I've selected an incorrect tarrif for Gas) is the cheapest available for me at the moment.

I'm thinking of switching to Scottish Power's capped till 2011 tariff, which would cost an extra £63/year but I could get £62 cashback through quidco (was £72 last week).

I'm finding Energyhelpline similarly useless. It would never accept the tariffs I was on with EDF (same message as above) .... and similarly won't accept I can be on EnergyOnline Extra Saver 5 (for both fuels) with EON.

Like you I was looking at Scottish Power capped to 2011 .. and the other comparison sites showed that would cost me just around £1100. Fortunately I checked with a direct comparison on the Scottish Power site - to be quoted £1282 (a 41% increase from my current £907).

At which point I worked out my Kwh consumption on each supply - and did the calculations myself. To find that all the comparison sites (even those that accept my EON tariff) were way out. And the 41% is very close to the massive hike I would have had to pay to get to the now discontinued cap with Scottish Power.

As I'm just back from holiday .. I'm going to have a fresh look. But with the calculator ... as the comparison sites seem to be totally untrustworthy at the moment. Whether it's just the capped rates I'm unsure ... because I've always had realistic results in the past. At least - I think I have!

So - I did a bit of work after the last post.

Energyhelpline as useless as before - won't accept the current tariffs. 2 other sites give me a price of (from £907) £1004 to move to NPower 2011 .... which is not bad.

Then worked it out myself .... came to £1388.34! A 53% increase - which is very bad? Then used Uswitch .. which is the only site I can find that accurately reflects all the EON tariffs and including whether they are NSC or not. That came to £1388.35. A discrepancy of one penny I can live with - but £384 from the other 2 sites is a bit outside acceptable parameters?

So ... do I really want to voluntarily increase my bill by a definite 53% for the next 2.5 years against the fact there will be increases ... but of unknown % terms over that period? I think I will take my chance ... and buy the OH a hot water bottle.
