Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

Having spent a few hours looking for a cheaper dual gas/electric deal for a friend I would recommend people actually compare tariffs before signing up for anything.
Either the models are way off or work it out for yourself but comparison sites tell me the best deal will save me £80 a year but comparing tariffs in a simple spreadsheet shows that I would actually be spending nearly £100 a month more than now - that's based on saying I'm a medium user and giving actual monthly spends.
Don't trust them!
Actually I think you need to enter your Killowatts usage for the year to get an accurate quote - not your monthly spend. Worked for me and I did the sums as well as the comparison sites.0 -
I'm currently with Southern Electric bill on Superdeal tariff, I have 3 meter readings (day, night and stored units) I have briefly looked at the various comparison sites but none seem to list this Superdeal energy or an equivalent service from another provider? (hopefully cheaper!) My house is 'all electric' no gas heating etc
Thanks for any help Huggins0 -
Hi Huggins
the superdeal tariff from southern electric is exclusive to those who live in the southern area... ( distribution area 20) ideal if you have electric storage heating and water heating
The idea behind it is the product acts as a good retention tool as other companies cant offer it...therefore you probably wouldnt be able to gain a comparison on one of those sites. . .
hope that helps?0 -
Hi all
In my experience NEVER EVER sign up at a stand in a precinct/ supermarket or let one of the salesmen in your home ...
Only switch on YOUR OWN TERMS IN YOUR OWN TIME, i.e call the company in question you wish to switch to.. ( use the say no to 0870 site to gain the freephone number too, which will save you a few quid ).
With direct debits, yes you may gain a 6% discount, but when they take off the tax at 5% you only actually gain 1% which really isnt any kind of saving, so ignore this as a possible bonus...
Also with direct debits... NEVER use a monthly direct debit as a quote in order to swich provider... what you need to check is the UNIT PRICE and STANDING CHARGE , these two are the ones to compare , the unit price often is split into standard energy and discounted energy at a certain point so check this also !
This scenario is particularly important when you are considering switching to a capped price...check the unit price!
That was my 5 pence worth !;)0 -
thx doncaster - so I not in a very good position to shop around for a better deal on my electricity then?!0

URGENT!!!!!!!!!!!! I've cut and pasted this from the Guardian Online today. It was at the bottom of an article about house prices. Concerns energy capped tariffs increasing in price tomorrow! So if you want a capped rate (with EON) you'd better do it tonight!
Householders wanting to fix their gas and electricity payments face higher costs from tomorrow. Energy giant Eon is expected to add an average £40 a year to its fixed-rate tariff.
The price hike follows similar moves by British Gas and Scottish Power and means that householders who want to fix the cost of their bills will from tomorrow typically pay £200 a year more than if they had fixed four months ago.0 -

Hmm. I have just signed up for a fixed rate tariff with E-ON. I was really considering whether the increase in standard rate I would pay would be worth the increase, as it is a second-home property and there is not a lot of electricity used there during the week.
So is the increase just in the fixed rate tariff or will the standard rate be affected as well - do I envoke my 14 day cool-off period ?Thank you for reading this message.0 -
Damn, looks like I missed my chance
The Price Protection tariff is no longer showing on EON's website as of 00:420 -
I'm utterly bemused.
We've been paying npower *spit* £82 a month for the last 18 months or so, and sort of just accepted it.
I am seriously looking to save money at the moment for something exciting at the end of the year, so started looking around hoping to save £10 a months or so. Moneysupermarket recommended scottish power at only £367.79 PER YEAR, saving £51 a MONTH
try as I might, having put our actual KWH usage into engines I can't work out how npower *spit* have charged us so much.0 -

Could it be that you are overpaying monthly and you have credit in your Npower account? Check your bills.0
