It'll move to some crappy system that is designed for mobile users to post quick comments only. Posts will probably get deleted and disappear after a couple of weeks. Just like how regional newspapers comments work on the end of an article.

If the forum is really "creaking" under the weight, then you would just update the hardware the forum runs on.
If you actually bothered to read the thread you are commenting on you would find out what the platform is being changed to (Hint) then you might be able to make an informed contribution rather than knee-jerk speculation based on ignorance.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

vBulletin is THE best forum software especially when you've been using forums running it since back in the day before the Internet became all hip and got taken over by social media and mobile phones. So I stand correct and it will be crap.

Are they going for the open source version so that they can screw it up themselves or one of the managed plans costing between $700 & $10,000 per month

vBulletin WAS the best back in its day. vBulletin under it's current owners is absolute tripe. You do know that the people that created vBulletin 3 (which this forum is based on) now have their own forum software which is a world leader?

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the "It's old and therefore good" argument is not informed, it is pure BS. I started programming on a Dec PDP-11 using MACRO-11 under RSTS. It was very good. That doesn't mean it is suitable for now though, does it? Your microwave probably has more processing power than a PDP-11 and, be honest, have you even heard of MACRO-11 as a programming language? Oh, and I first went online through Compuserve. It was very good. I would not recommend using it now.

vBulletin v3 is broken, hacked, obsolete and is what is used here. Upgrading to v5 (the current version) is a real pain, requiring multiple version upgrades - not just one - and each step is neither straightforward nor totally backward compatible. That is before you add in all the custom code/modules that have been added to MSE, some or all of which will fail during migration. There is also the problem that v5 requires upgraded versions of both PHP and mySQL and v3 doesn't work with the later versions of either so there can be no stepped upgrade.

In other words, changing the bbs software is necessary and upgrading is at least as difficult as implementing a new system, so why shouldn't they shop around and get what they believe to be best for their web site? It isn't as if vBulletin v5 has been well received. The best reviews were along the lines of "at least it is better than the car crash that was v4" and their current cloud offerings are not suitable for the sheer scale of MSE's forums.

Do I, personally want MSE to change? As a consumer, no I don't. Change is scary, change is wrong, change might mean I have to do something slightly differently to the way I currently do. But as a developer I can see why it is happening and accept that change is sometimes necessary. Do I have a crystal ball that says everything will be fine? No I don't, but you don't have one either.

Another vote for the 'old look'.
Which is much calmer on the eyes, than the more recent changed one
    Agreed

I don't know what these 'issues' are that 'break' the forum as it always works for me.

I'm an old member & the forum is a green look to me. Looks perfectly fine.
My partner has an account here although actually only reads rather than posting & that account the forum looks blue and things are a bit difficult to find compared to my layout. It looks pretty awful tbh.

Oh and regards vBulletin - i've been on forums since 2000/2001. Sure some of you will have probably been on a forum since the day the very first one went live and no doubt 1 or 2 of you even before that.
I've experienced various forums & layouts over the years & some 'modern' and 'fresh' ones have been absolutely disgusting to be on. Those i've seen marked up vBulletin have always been my favourite layouts.

I have to wonder if any of us actually care that our account has been hacked. I mean who on earth would know that my previous name & my current name actually referred to the real me? Most of us tend to be careful about giving identifiable info & new posters are ofter warned to remove any such info. I mean look at facebook. They don't even need to be hacked the info is out there.
  • Fab decision to move to vanilla.

Digital spy use it and it works well.

Not sure why it's so expensive though, with all the affiliate links to high paying financial products it's a drop of water in an ocean and will make back that cost in a few hours of running
