Maybe this time next year....
Thanks, so you were talking US prices then, in pounds. I thought you meant £25k in the UK. I seem to recall estimates of £35k when import costs and taxes had been added.
The good news, is that they did deliver the $35k car, but only briefly, and clearly they didn't want to sell at that price, hence the SR+ model at a price increase that made it almost impossible not to choose.
I think Elon said something in the investors call about hoping to get the TM3 price back down to $35k soon.
Additional good news is that based on the US TM3 costs, the TMY and Chinese TM3 will see much lower CAPEX and OPEX costs, so all looking good regarding prices.Mart. Short extract from an article in yesterday’s Telegraph about Tesla and its rivals.
Succeeding as an automotive start-up is no easy task, and Tesla’s problems exemplify some of the challenges of starting a car manufacturing business from scratch. Sceptics suggest Tesla’s brand could struggle to overcome the quality control and customer service issues that have been raised by even its most slavish devotees in recent months.
Owners have complained of months-long waits for parts and of struggling to contact the brand when they need a service. Paintwork and body-fit issues have also attracted complaints. Bulls are unconcerned, arguing that these are short-term teething problems that Tesla is fixing and which will go away once it has established itself. But some analysts think its problems will only get tougher to address as its customer base grows, and it must also scale its manufacturing as it seeks to become a mass-market car maker.

Another snippet from a Telegraph article from yesterday.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2019/10/28/can-countries-catch-chinas-electric-car-dominance/
More than one million electric cars were sold in the country last year – representing half of global sales. The government has installed about a million charging stations on the streets, which is a far cry from the 15,800 public units in the UK.
Shenzhen-based BYD (Build Your Dreams) is neck-to-neck with Tesla in the race to become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles. It sold 250,000 last year and is this year expected to sell more electric cars than those powered by fossil fuel.
BYD said its Qin model, a plug-in hybrid, was the world’s most popular electric car. It is rolling out a “Pro” version that can travel up to 500km (310 miles) on a single charge, with an 80pc charge taking 30 minutes.

Also I'm not sure going on about a NA market that must have trucks for the distances and the winter is a useful generalisation. There has been a marked decline in the number of youngsters in the US having a driving licence, and as a keen skier who lived in the Alps for a number of years I found a Fabia with snow tyres all I needed along with a collapsible (avalanche) shovel and a brush to get the 40cm of snow off the roof and windscreen! Five up on snowy roads in a non 4x4 diesel Fiat Panda is quite fun, especially if you've had a few! But even there the market segment of EV trucks is being developed.
Its a view into the mindset. I agree with you, Ive never needed more than snowchains and have travelled in Norway with studded tyres being enough but over there it is a lot different and Tesla is an american company with up to now primarily catering for an american market.0 -

MINI Cooper SE Electric Car Prices For US Market Announced — Under $20,000 In California & Colorado With Incentives
“It is popular to pooh-pooh any electric car with fewer than 200 miles of range, but in real-world driving, the MINI Cooper SE offers spirited driving characteristics and will need recharging only one or two times during a typical week. For comparison purposes, the Nissan LEAF with a 40 kWh battery and 150 miles of range has a similar starting price, so now drivers have a choice at that price point. After federal incentives, both cars can find a way into American driveways for a net cost of around $23,000! Choices are good things to have as the EV revolution moves forward. Not everyone wants to or is able to fork over $40K+ for a Tesla Model 3.”

Can you imagine though how well the TM3 would sell at £25k in the UK, perhaps 99% of demand overnight ..... but sadly not the supply to meet it?
I popped into a car dealership last week and saw a Hyundai Picanto at £15k. I had to have a lie down in a dark room, whilst Wifey fanned me with an old Haynes manual.Mart. Definitely worth a read, especially like the lack of power for hauling, and too much power for wet roads, or the fact that highway driving means you can't go far, as you don't get the chance to 'self charge' via re-gen braking ...... perpetual motion machine .... anyone!

I think I would have needed a lie down as well as Hyundai don’t make the Picanto.
Good to see you are looking at cheap ICE cars again as for your situation they do make more sense.Northern Lincolnshire. 7.8 kWp system, (4.2 kw west facing panels , 3.6 kw east facing), Solis inverters, Solar IBoost water heater, Mitsubishi SRK35ZS-S and SRK20ZS-S Wall Mounted Inverter Heat Pumps, ex Nissan Leaf owner)0 -
