It's a 20 zone. There is no legal requirement for repeater signage. The traffic calming is deemed to do the same job.

If you read some of my other replies, you will see that I have mentioned that I found out that repeaters are not required. Thanks for the link though.

Put the "But it can't possibly be my fault!" back in the box, and accept that you (and plenty of other people) have simply been consistently and massively unobservant.

The 20 zone is 475m long, past a college, with a short spur to a primary school. In that short distance, there are SIX sets of raised traffic calming measures.

It was introduced in 2012, as part of the planning conditions insisted on by the local authority for the college development.

The signage is perfectly clear. Not only are there the entry signs you posted a link to, there are 30 signs as you leave the "20 zone" for any side road...

    ...and at the other end.

Totally agree. I'm finding it difficult to believe that someone who drives along there several times a week still can't see where the 20mph zone begins and ends despite it being there for over 7 years and still drives at 35mph knowing full well that there's a school/college etc.
  • crikey, another one. I mean, why would I come onto a forum asking these questions if I knew the signs were there?

I have never seen the signs. I am sure that is quite simple to grasp. I have asked my wife and she had no idea and I have also asked my neighbour out of curiosity and he had no idea either. It is a total of two signs over the course of 500m. I would hardly say that it is clear. What's more, before the changes came in, it was always a 30mph road.

I bet there is a huge percentage of people who have no idea that it is a 20mph road. I am 35 with 18 years of experience driving. No convictions until now, no accidents and I used to regularly drive 50 miles each day, so I think my driving skills are just fine.

the facts speak for themselves. I got caught and I will take the fine, it is as simple as that. I don't like the way in which they place these cameras in awkward places and I do believe that the signs should be placed in as many places as possible. It should be about making people aware, as much as possible, what the speed actually is. Not two signs that are almost 500m apart in a bustling, busy area.

and yes, your eyes have to be looking at the parked cars on both sides of the road in the laybys, they have to be ready for the kids who kick footballs around and people stepping out from between vehicles. Add to this the traffic coming the other way that you have to give way to because of cars parked on the pavement due to the lack of parking there. I have genuinely never seen those signs. .
Regardless of the speed limit, do you really think 30 is a sensible speed in a "bustling, busy area" with "parked cars on both sides of the road" "kids who kick footballs around and people stepping out from between vehicles" and "traffic coming the other way that you have to give way to because of cars parked on the pavement"?

And what did you imagine the speed bumps were telling you?

And therein lies the root cause of the problem.

Well given that a school has been at that site for over 40 years and the leisure centre has been there for at least 30 years plus the road was a 30mph road, I just assumed the speed bumps were put in to stop people from ploughing right through the area at any speed they wish. I had no idea the speed limit had changed.

People can bleat on about the lack of driving skills or not believe me when I say I had no idea if they want, I really couldn't care less. I'll take the fine and points or whatever else they throw at me. It is as simple as that really.

Because you were hoping someone would come up with a "technicality" for you to appeal your driving offence, why else. If you really do lack the observational skills to see that particular stretch of road has a restricted speed then I'd suggest you go and get some further driving lessons.

If you have never been caught speeding or never speed then I applaud you. As I said, getting caught once in 18 years is good going I guess.

And still you won't accept that the root cause of the problem is your mindset - you'll continue to claim you were entrapped by the signage that you couldn't possibly have been expected to see even once in seven years of driving past at least four signs and two road markings each day.
