If your flat is changed to a one bedroom flat could you then claim overcrowding and get a two bedroom flat?

I meant 6 square metres of course, sorry but having to repeat this like a mantra over and over.... Room size is under 6 square metres in size.

Question is about a room under 6 square meters being classed as a bedroom. That is all.

From what I gather and please forgive me if I'm wrong, the window being a security risk might be a factor the HA might take seriously. There are solutions for that: Vents or perhaps these vents

As for the size of the room being deemed inadequate, I have to agree with those who state if you can fit a single bed in it, it can be classed as a bedroom. If you physically could not fit a single bed in the room, it would not be sold (legitimately) as a 2 bed flat; no-one would pay the price of a 2 bed flat for it. It sounds as if it can and is being used as a bedroom.

I should probably state my position just for clarification: I spent over a decade in council accommodation and was grateful for the hand up it gave me; it was not a hand-out as I worked full time and never claimed a penny in housing benefit. It enabled me and my husband to save up the deposit to buy our own house and gain a foot on the ladder.

I will always be grateful for that and yes, there were a great many things wrong with the places I rented, the complete lack of sound insulation being the worst. I am sorry, OP but those reliant on social housing really cannot afford to be too fussy unless they are prepared and able to better their situation. I know some of us are far luckier than others in that respect... I hope you know that you are far luckier than most to have social housing. As an ex-council tenant, I feel able to say that.

Hopefully someone can correct my maths if I'm wrong...

If a room is 6sqm, then the shortest a wall can be (in a square room) is 2.45m.

So even in a square room, you can fit a standard single bed in it. What are they 1.8m?

If the room is not square, then the "long" wall will be even longer, but the room won't be as wide.

How can you NOT fit a standard single bed in this room?

**Edit - just noticed you said under 6 SQM, how much under? ***
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Op, you haven’t given, as far as I can see, anywhere near enough information for people to help you. You just keep harping on about the 6 meters.

    Who is this other person?
Are you of the same sex?
    Are you related?
Are they on the tenancy/living with you legally?
    Are they only there temporarily?
What other rooms are in the property (bedrooms and living rooms) and what are their sizes?
Is the other person 10 or older?

Ultimately, there is no minimum size for a bedroom, as long as someone can fit a bed into the room. However, there are space requirements in relation to overcrowding. But this can only be addressed with the above information being provided.

its not just about fitting a bed in . its about how much extra room there is.

And can it be classed as a bedroom when its a boxroom.

And can you get a reduction in rent because its a boxroom.

If you think the rent is too high for what it is then contact the rent officer, they are meant to assess rents if tenants think they are unreasonable. It doesnt really matter what name its given.

I gave you the link for getting the rent re assessed. I’m assuming that is why you are asking about room sizes, in order to reduce the rent?

Apart from the rooms and sizes the questions above relate to whether they should have a 1 or 2 bed property but thats not the question. The question is about minimum bedroom sizes and what makes this property two bedroom. I've got a cupboard which is 10 feet long and 33 inches wide. This could be slept in but no one would consider it a bedroom.

Forget that its a tenant thats asking. When this was deemed to be two bedrooms what was the criteria?

HAs are generally very fair and keen to follow the rules. They will be happy to explain why it is classed as it is. The op needs to find out if it is within guidelines and if not there is no reason not to reclassify it. If it is the op will have their answer.

Is it just me or does this thread feel like bullying?
  • OP - I’m not sure how it works, but is there a way to get yourself onto a waiting list to move into a property with two full sized bedrooms should one come up?

From what you describe, it seems that money is not the problem it really is physically the size of the second bedroom.
