hi.
i have never read this thread before, but my today my nephew had a psychologist for a home visit (after a few nursery visits) and she more or less said that he has Aspergers and ADHD. SO i thought i would take a nosey on here and get up to date with things for him and my sister.
What we have been told is that the psychologist is referring him to a specialist doctor to assess medically and then he will go on to be statemented for primary school as the likelihood is that he will definitely need a classroom assitant fulltime within primary school.
Dont have any particular questions at the minute, just wanted to make myself known to all the regulars as i will probably be popping in and out now and again.
Any advice that any of you guys have would be very beneficial to me and my family at the minute.
Thanks, Carla.Carla-Farla!!

I'm not, but my son (29) and his girlfriend (21) are. My son has learned a lot of coping strategies and has matured greatly these last couple of years. He is not diagnosed as AS was not recognized as a condition when he was young, but we and he believe that he is on the spectrum. He is also slightly dyspraxic.
His girlfriend is formally diagnosed about three years ago; she is just waiting to hear about dla and is waiting for an appointment with ASPIRE to help her get a job.
Will have a look on google for 'Autism Gene' (sounds like an Aspie Cowboy.....

How to be super organised --
you can only apply for motability iif a child is 3 yrs or over! Ring up the dept for work & pensions ask for a DLA form to be sent out
then when you see the specialist and he/she gives you a diagnosis get him to fill the form in at the appointment!
to fill in the form you take the worst day - i.e. my dd will have a temper tantrum that can last for up to 2hrs she needs bathing/toileting and i have to sort her out many times during the night - somedays are good and they take the pain away from these awful days so you have to be brave and just do this
the form then you have to state that it is 24 hrs /7 days a week - cross out their little boxes (how many times during aday) and write 24/7
When you have a diagnosis you can then ring the local council and get a reduction of 25% off of your council tax for having a disable child as they have a lot of aids that take up a lot of space! i have a wheelchair as my dd doesnt like new environments etc.
But you must be honest - i always found myself saying it wasnt as bad as it actually was! you have to open up and it is a part of the grieving process- its a horrible thing and even worse for all of the effort that has to be put into fighting for what rightly should be issued to the child.
it took me 8yrs to grieve for my child (its not easy as they are still here and you still love them dearly - but the standard image of your kids getting married having kids of their own - gets smashed to bits) life is a struggle and you have to initially take it day by day.
by the ay if you ever have problems in a supermarket - when they kick off (my favourite payback is flling a trolley with frozen stuff then walking out) whilst having a rant about the !!!!!! who go there!
way back when peoples attitudes towards my dd were like "that child needs discipline" and i would try to tell her off smack her - over time as i and she grew i realised that it was peer pressure making me flip when she misbehaved so now i rant at them - most of the population are so !!!!!! regarding disability awareness!
most of all be happy - a diagnosis is a huge relief as well as a curse!0 -
For motability i saw this "If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, getting a new car is easier and more affordable than ever. Through Motability, you simply turn part or all of your allowance into the car of your choice"
So you use the money you get in disability for hiring a nice car? Is that right?0 -

hi i dont know about the war pensioners mobility allowance but if you get the high rate dla mobility then yes you can use it for a car, but you dont have to, its your choice. on some cars there is a deposit to pay, but you lease the car for 3 years, and i believe only have to pay for petrol, all insurance, tax, servicing and anything that may go wrong with the car is covered. they will take an amount of your weekly mobility payment depending on the car you choose.

think that is the right web site for all the information.
im waiting for dla to make there decision at the moment, the claim renewal is with the decision maker, the waiting is doing me in!! i want to keep ringing them to find out if the decision has been made and what it is.
right i have a big meeting with the professionals at lunch time, wish me luck!!Back to comping Jan 2013 :j

For a motability vehicle - they take all of the motability allowance- you can buy a car and use the money yourself to pay - although then you have to insure/service/mot and maintain all breakdowns etc.
you get free road tax with dla for 1 vehicle anyway so even on your own car (that is with high rate component).
many options are available when we pick a car i am trying to make sure that each 3 yrs we now choose one without a required deposit as you do not get this back0 -
Rose Marie.... I think it is prob worth getting a diagnosis really. It will have an impact on his schooling and he should get some input from SALT.
My DS is 5 and has a one to one at school via his statement. When the Speech Therapist assessed him recently she noted his Receptive language was on the bottom centile:eek:she has given lots of workbooks and exercises to his one to one to try to improve things. She also assess him regularly and helps with how to best communicate with DS.
Apparently as he is on the bottom centile he fulfils the criteria for a statement solely for that even if he didnt have autism......so it is quite a serious language problem:rolleyes:
Please PM me if I can help anymore....also have you looked on the APD website it has some good info;)0
