my dd is now 13 with sever autism and assoociated learning difficulties caused by the asd! i think that you may well find in time that the global developmental delay is the same as my dd0 -
one of my 14 year old sons is due to have his first filling in july, and i'm terrified of the dentist hurting him,
As with everything else, there is a huge range of responses within the term 'Asperger's'.
I have a couple of kid patients with it, one adult, and 2 autistic kids as well.
All are absolutely fine with dental treatment. It's just a case of slowing down a bit, explaining things clearly, and - occasionally - lying!
I never tell kids that I'm going to 'inject' them. I always say I'm going to spray something on the gum, and that it might just feel a bit cold. These days, the needles are so sharp, they're rarely felt, especially if it's not anticipated. If anything is felt, the kid (Asperger's or not) just thinks "Oh - That's the cold feeling".
The WORST thing is having anxious parents around the place!!!!! Kids pick up the anxiety, and that can make things impossible. Especially if they're saying things like "Be Brave" or "It won't hurt" or "are you going to give him an injection". I don't mind having parents in the surgery, but they have to sit in the corner and keep quiet.
If you feel you'll be anxious on the day, then either let Dad take him, or stay in the waiting room, and let him go through on his own if he'll do that. If he won't, then you really must try and interfere as little as possible. I'm sure the dentist wouldn't have offered to do the treatment though if he didn't think there was a good chance of him being able to get through it.How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

Just to report on latest, in case its of any use to anyone reading this. DS went to Drs this morning and his ears are fine (which I knew), a bit of a relief in a way as at least he's not in pain. But now I have to deal with the fact that his auditory senses have become more sensitive. We need to find a stratergy to help him cope at school. Dr advised us not to use ear guards and headphones too often as he might withdraw, so its back to square one.
Dr also said the problems he has been having with wobbly teeth are perfectly normal and not to worry. So thats something.
Any suggestions on coping with noise problems would be much appreciated. Thanks0 -

Hi,
Have just come across this thread and hoped I could 'pop in'.
Our youngest son (7) is 'in the process' of diagnosed with Aspergers. It has taken 4 years to get this far as our GP told us there was nothing wrong with him and basically to go away when he was 3.
I haven't had a chance to read through yet .... so many posts , but did just notice a couple of posts about schooling, which I found very interesting. We have opted to home educate the two youngest, and had made the decision before realising there was a problem. Reading through, it looks as though it may have been the correct decision.
Anyway, just popped in to say 'Hi'. I will have a read back through the posts ..... this may take some time
Best Wishes

hi everyone
Thanks for the replies re the dentist.
Since that incident when cleaning his teeth the other night DS hasnt mentioned any pain so hopefully it is just the minor decay the dentist picked up in that tooth last time and he will loose the tooth before it causes problems and has to be removed:rolleyes:
does anyone else find their child is talking all the time about "their" subjects......my son talks constantly about numbers and the time:o,it never stops and he is flapping and skipping up and down the whole time. If you say anything to him in conversation his first question is always " what time was it?"
Rose-marie, my son has autism and a couple of other things such as APD ( auditory processing disorder). all his sensory processes seem exaggerated also.
We do use the ear defenders for noisy situations and also I can recommend an excellent book called "The out of sync child" which deals with sensory processing disorders. gives advice on children with over sensitive hearing and other senses. It is by carol Stock Kranowitz.0 -
Are there any adult Aspies here? And has anyone read about the 'Autism gene' story today?0

Thank you - I will get that book from Amazon. We were thinking about limiting the ear guards to possibly Assembly (lots of cheering and clapping) and playtime (children screaming etc), and maybe if when he's not well.
I've been looking into APD over the past week, never heard of it before, I'm pretty sure that is what he has (as well as ASD). Will he benefit from being diagnosed do you think? Is there anything professionals can do?
The reason I asked is that he found his original diagnosis very stressful and am reluctant to put him through anything like that again unless its really going to benefit him.0 -
