I went out to my greenhouse today and a slug was munching on a new seedling  So i scooped him off and put him on a stone (any good flat stone laying about) and chopped him in half :D No doubt when i go out there tomorrow one will be eating his corpse, and he will end up the same way as his meal :rotfl:

I don't have the answer either - snails I find easier than slugs to deal with. I'm nearly convinced slugs have internal teleportation packs built in - just like Startrek - they seem to appear and disappear as if from nowhere

But having just heard they really don't like hair - at least I've found a way of using the hair they have me pulling out when I see the carnage they have wrought.

Mix yeast with water and put into slug traps , jam jars or any other container. This works like the beer as they are attracted to the yeast odour.
    Always works for me :D

I put a new batch of slug pellets down yesterday and I just went out to check the plants, and fingers crossed the new shoots are slug munched free :)

A bit annoying as I have to remember to go out when ever it has finished raining and pop some pellets on the plants. Oh the joys of being a veggie gardener :)

Although I've used slug pellets in the past, I stopped using them because they kill the birds ...that eat the slugs (typical of the feedback we humans impose on the environment when we interfere... Something works short term but ends up killing of the natural preditor of the original problem).

I do sympathise with the loss of carefully nurtured seedlings - I lost all my tarragon seedlings last year. I've been trying coffee grounds this year & it's done the trick so far - we do drink a lot of coffee though!

We also had a slug problem in our front room. I eventually figured out that they were coming in via a minute gap under the french windows. I put plenty of salt down in the gap & fixed a lath of wood over the covering (which, once varnished, made the doorway look better anyway). Haven't had any problems with them for a few years now.

We used to have a huge problem with them and as the slug pellets didn't seem to help I gave up using them (didn't like resorting to them anyway) things didn't seem to get any worse and eventually got better - then late one night I spotted a hedgehog in the garden!
I made slug traps out of 2ltr plastic lemonade bottles - cut off the top and push it upside down into the open bottle, part fill with left over beer dregs and half buried into ground to make it nice and easy for slugs to enter. Very effective but gross when full of dead slugs!
Snails are easy - either throw them onto drive - birds sit waiting on wall! or pop them onto bird table (fast food for birds!) but I absolutely draw the line at picking up slugs_pale_

I buy all of my Growing Success Slug Pellets from my local Wilkinsons every October/November when they sell off the gardening stuff to make way for Christmas lines, last year i got 4 tubs for £3.
I tend to buy out the shop every year when they do it, I got this pack of Pathclear Sachets for 50p last year!!!

BTW Growing Success slug pellets Do Not harm birds or any other wildlife, they do not contain any poison (iron will not poison you unless you or the birds/frogs eat very large amounts)

Growing Success Advanced Slug Pellets (Ferramol®) 750g

    a. based on Iron (III) phosphate (also known as Ferric phosphate).
    b. does NOT contain methiocarb or metaldehyde.
    c. Fully biodegradable.
    d. Rain resistant.
    e. Children, pets and wildlife need not be excluded from treated
areas (but store the product in its original container in a safe place out
of the reach of children and animals. Follow the directions for use
    carefully).

Last year somebody gave the tip of smearing vaseline on the rim of containers. I tried it and it works!
Not only did it work last year but I've just grown some lettuce in a container which still had the vaseline on from last year - and no slug in sight (or should I say 'inside'??? ;) )

Pity it doesn't work on beds.........
Have had some success with vapour rub before ( cheap vicks).
