Just had to join in and say arghhhhhh

Two weeks ago planted out my front garden, darn slugs and snails have eaten all my salvia in two days and two very strong dahlia plants at least a foot tall have been reduced to twigs when I went out there this morning.

I am inundated with snails and slugs as my garden is strange as it was originally part of a mound thingy and has been levelled so as the adjoining gardens are sloped away my garden is damp. The fact that it is overgwon with very mature shrubs and could pass as a jungle on a bad day doesn't help. I have used hair, egg shells and such like but am off out now to buy real slug pellets as I have had enough.

Incidentally why did they eat salvia and dahlias but leave the snapdragon (I can't spell the real name) alone?

I'll glue the bits back together and take a photo :p

    ooooohhhhh me too
I went out this morning as its the 1st rain we have had for a few days after being scorching -80 indoors in the shade at 4pm  ... and whilst i was out there i rounded up 23 of the blighters... 1  i swear you could have put a saddle on it :rotfl: ... just went out to see if he was still on the bird table (armed with a ruler and camera :o -the neighbour must think i am barking :p ) but it seems he has become breakfast for one of my friendly birds.. has to be the jay as i doubt the others could have handled him ewwww

Yesterday i move my butternut squash and courgetes into tubs as in the ground the slugs were having a field day  -still they are happy and settled now..finger crossed

  • Try going in the garden when it is dark and use a high powered torch to locate the beasties. Remove them by hand for snails and with a small trowel for slugs. I mix Jeyes fluid in a bucket with a little water and put the creatures in it. I drain the fluid the day before the rubbish collection and place the deceased in a bag which goes out with the trash.
By the way, let your neighbours know so they won't be alarmed if they see a dark figure with a torch prowling about.

They don't like the sap of certain plants. So the trick is to try and plant the plants they do like in the middle of them.

I've found that my my pot of marigolds (a mixture of French and African), fuschias, roses and osteoperum don't attrach slugs & snails. There as last year they happily tried to munch away on my sunflowers, lilies and lavendar until I got out the slug pellets. And my poppies while they had a bit of slug damage they didn't like as much.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Well - I deployed the Growing Success Advanced slug pellets last night and this morning, absolutely nothing has been touched and there are no slug bodies. Apparantly they crawl away to die after eating them :T

A big thankyou to the people that suggested it - highly recommended :j

I read online somewhere that they can get to 20cm. That makes mine about 2/3 grown.
That photo was taken a while ago, before I declared war on them. So he's wandering around somewhere....:D
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
