not sure if this is the right place, but I checked my lettuce (In pots) yesterday and they've all been eaten by slugs :( They were only tiny leaves, about 3 - 4 mm. Should I be replanting new seeds? Or will they grow back?
  • If they have left the middle growing tip they might recover. I'd leave them a week to see but also plant some more seeds too. And look into trying to beat the slimey suckers

I found that this was the best deterant as snails are famously homophobic, and once 'outed' skulk off in shame never to return.

Apparently if you put slugs in the bathroom they eat the mould. Also if you burn scrambled eggs or the like, then put the saucepan in the garden and overnight they clean the pan for you. I kid you not. I saw it on a web site today called 'Self sufficientish'. So they can do some good.

We had some cashnew nuts going off, so I put them out for the birds - they weren't interested. So, I waited and next day snails were all over the cashnew nuts! Day after that all the nuts were gone, all the snails were gone - proper recycling.

The birds ate the snails who ate the cashnew nuts.

    Marvellous. :j

Actually, I was once told to feed slugs and snails peanuts, as they swell up in their stomachs and kill them. (Old wives tales - Dontcha just luvvum?) You've just reminded me that I never did put it to the test! Who needs bunny suicide when you can have 101 ways to kill a slimy git?!

That's really quite sick SilverCharming...you don't live up to your name.

Can we just stick to ethical ways of keeping the slugs off our plants please.

Ummm... it was a joke?! I just think of all the weird ways I have been told to kill them... IMHO would make a funny (but yes, very sick) cartoon.

Other the blackbirds who live in my garden and help themselves, all I use to control my slugs is copper tape and to be honest, I've been a bit lax even with that. You're talking to someone who cries when she has to flush a dead fish.

I just mentioned the peanuts because that's what I was told once. I don't believe slug pellets (including advanced ones), death by drunken drowning or deliberately 'feeding' the birds to be especially ethical either, but each to their own. On this site, as in my garden, I generally live and let be.

And what are those? Has the General Synod passed a decree in my absence? Is there a Papal Encyclical?

I think you'll find somewhere in this or another thread, somebody mentioned oatmeal in the same context. However, somebody else countered by saying that oatmeal attracts vermin.
