Rather than put slug pellets everywhere and risk the birds eating poisen slugs, use nematodes as a natural predater. Place a roof tile or two near your hostas or veg to attract insects that feed on slugs eg centipedes and the big black beetles you see around. make a few hidy holes for frogs and toads to inhabit and try to encourgae hedgehogs. Regular bird feeding will increase your bird population and help reduce the slugs too.

Nemaslug will supply the nematode worms and www.superspray.co.uk will supply the garden sprayer which clips to the hose pipe. both mail order and both work!

That's really quite sick SilverCharming...you don't live up to your name.

Can we just stick to ethical ways of keeping the slugs off our plants please.
Either you kill them or you don't  who cares which way you kill them. I don't.
Is it more ethical to slice them up with scissors, or kill them by drowning, or poison them with pellets, or infect them with nematodes, or make them explode with bran, or peanuts apparently?
I think you owe silvercharming an apology.

Well, over the last few days we have had quite a bit of rain. This morning I went out to do my usual 10 minute dead heading, odd weeding before getting ready for work. All over my paving stones there were tiny snails in shells! I don't quite know how snails are produced but there had obviously been some sort of hatching! I am very sorry to report that I went round stamping on as many as I could so that they didn't grow into huge plant eating snails! I have felt a bit guilty all day!

Snails lay egg's underground. They dig a hole and lay them in it, as i found out when I found one doing this next to my potatoes

My radishes are starting to come up :j but I've noticed that the slugs/snails are already starting to enjoy a bit of a munch on some of the leaves. What's the best way of keeping the little blighters off my crop? Ideally, I'd like to be the one enjoying the fruits of my labour, not the blasted slugs/snails :rotfl:

    Thanks

I'd google 'slug prevention' as there are a myriad of ways of dealing with them, organic, non-organic and it really depends on how you want to garden.

    Hello all,

I'm a bit of a gardening/outdoors numpty but I'm after a bit of advice about the dreaded snails if you don't mind...

We recently got a snazzy wall-mounted washing line (it's one of these just to explain what it looks like!). I was totally in love with it, although it's obviously been folded up with its raincover on for the last week or so with the horrible weather we've been having. I've just been out and put it up, and found 4 snails living under the raincover, and quite a few large presents which they've left for us all over the line!! _pale_:( I didn't even realise snails did poos... how silly am I. :o

Does anyone have any advice on how to keep them off? I can't see that any of the usual remedies like beer/oats/salt/snail pellets etc are going to work as they obviously won't stick to a wall! Oh and it's a pebbledash wall, and that didn't put them off at all..
