. I was going to suggest copper tape, but snails aresn't as fussed about it as slugs, and it wouldn't stick to the pebbledash. You could try getting some petroleum jelly and putting a big thick layer of it on the wall around the outside of where the washing line sits? They are not supposed to like crossing it, but I've never tried it myself. You might have to keep reapplying it too0

Get a small child to sit there and pick them off, and pay them 1p per snail!!!

My sunflowers which I have grown for the first time this year are being eaten by snails/slugs. I am reluctant to buy slug pellets as I have a cat and think I have read somewhere that slug pellets are harmful to pets.
I also spotted some tape in my local hardware store which you put round the pot and is meant to give the slug/snail an electic shock! has anyone tried this and would they recommend it?
Can anyone offer any homemade safe tips for saving my sunflowers from these dreaded slug/snails?
Also when can I expect my sunflowers to flower? Some have grown quite tall but no flowers yet......
Thanks0 -
There is a whole thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=455780&highlight=slugs+snails about various ways people use to banish slugs and snails. I use the copper 'shock' tape and it works fine for me in containers. You can also get advanced slug pellets by growing success (tall blue tub) that are non-harmful to cats, though when I tried them I suspected they were also non-harmful to slugs and snails. If you fancy trying them they're only £3.49 in Wilkos if you have one nearby, I have seen them for sale at double that elsewhere.0

The blue pellets work.......:D
I put some down last night in my raised bed, that also has copper tape round the top of it, this morning there was more than a dozen decomposing slugs inside the raised bed...
Last year we lost all our beans to slugs, I thought the tape would work, a few days ago though, I noticed small tell tale holes in some of the leaves.
I've also put a cage in effect around the bed to stop the cats getting in, I will post pics later on "show us you veg patch" I was going to do an update on my veggies anyway...
And yes I know I wasn't going to use chemicals, but need must......:cool:To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
Get the growing success slug pellets, they are safe around cats & dogs etc0

I got a tub and filled it with compost and then sowed some lettuce seeds in it. Then placed the tub in a carrier bag and gave it to my dad for fathers day .
Then the other day I asked him how the lettuce was , and he said that it was doing really well and that it was sitting in the garden still in the carrier bag , and he notised that the snails and slugs couldnt get up the sides of the carrier bag to the lettuce :T , he said he sat watching a snail trying to climb up the carrier bag and it just couldnt get up it :rotfl: .
So now I will place all my young plants in pots sitting in carrier bags .Kindness costs nothing0 -
Thats a really simple thing to do! when I start sewing lettuce I'll have to remember this one
