i have a problems with snails, not only in the garden but, when i come downstairs in the morning there are snail trails in my kitchen and living room carpet.
i have never actually seen them inside, they must come when it is dark and no one is around.
any ideas on how to prevent them from entering house?
Nice to save.

Not really as my mum suffers from slugs in her house.

Is yours an old house. When I mean old does it have a damp proof course. It might be that the house is damp. And needs drying out.

I have heard that snails don't like copper. Could you put some wide copper wire down. Might stop them.

    Otherwise

Actually, we used to get snail trails in the house too. It wasn't snails, but slugs that the dog brought in on his fur. Teeny, tiny ones. He'd go out, have a snuffle in the grass, come in with these things attached to him, and they'd detach themselves the moment they touched the carpet. Do you have a pet?

no, i don't have any pets and sorry they are slugs. the snails are all over the garden.. they look so alike, just the snails have the shells on their backs.
i thought there might be some sort of chemical or anything else i could use to deter them.
anyway thanks to all for the quickie replies.

That's good. When my sister was plagued with slugs (damp house) she used to come down and find them all round the cat's saucer of milk. Eugh!

Sprinkle the carpet with some salt, you can always hoover it up in the morning. It seems to work well in my Nans greenhouse.

Have seen what happens to snail and slugs that have salt on them. They go green and the mucus bubbles and just runs out of them.

Would think that would not do your carpets much good.

You could put slug pellets down. But not really much good having that around the edge of the room of your living room. Any idea where they are coming in as you could slug pellets down.

Down side to slug pellets is that birds eat slugs and snails and you will posion them.

  • I'm sure i read somewhere to put a saucer of beer on your borders or on in this case on the carpet. they are attracted to it and drown or something. tho thats as bad as salt :(

In the garden slugs and snails dont like to "walk" over grit, sprinkle coarse sand round your most attacked plants.

I would hate to have slugs in the house!! I guess your first thing is to find out where they are coming in. Do you have any air bricks they may be using?? can you follow the trails to see where they lead? I know thet are slow but they can still cover a huge distance in one night. are any windows open or something?
