I like the sound of these Growing Success's Advanced slug pellets - unfortunately we dont have a Dobbies in Northern Ireland - is there anywhere here that I might be able to purchase that?

I also like the idea of proper slug pellets but using a net to cover the area protecting the birds from eating the slugs. However, how fast-acting are the pellets - would the slugs have time to slither out of the protection of the net before they die ?
  • For those trying slug pellets and worried about pets etc, use the Growing Success Advanced slug pellets, these are harmless to wildlife pets and children. they are better than the non-organic ones and they last longer and more rain resistant! :-)

That method from Sunnyday is meant to be very good too, Haven't tried it myself but i've read some good reviews about it so well worth a try!

    Hi all,
i found a good idea from someone on here but i can`t find it again now.

Credit to the person who originally posted this if i ever see it again, the way to get rid of the slugs was this.

Take 2 cloves of chopped garlic and add to 2 pints of water, bring to the boil, strain and cool then top the liquid back up back up to 2 pints. Add some to water in a spray bottle to spray all around your plants.
I`ve been using it for about 4 days now and so far so good but have to keep spraying each day as we`ve had lots of rain.

The woman who owned the National Hosta Collection stated this on a Gardeners World episode. Myself and one or two other posters have posted it on these boards.

The only warning I can give you is that the garlic really stinks your kitchen out when you are boiling it up but it does seem to work. And it seems to work on other creatures like squirrels not just slugs and snails as they don't like garlic either.

Not heard of the Advanced slug pellets before. Are they available at most garden centres ?
We've used the normal green pellets in the past and they've worked up to a point but I've come to the conclusion I'm maybe better off growing plants that slugs don't like (geraniums for one) but its our veg I'm concerned about.
Like the sound of the garlic mix........that could be worth a try

I've seen them in the DIY sheds like B&Q, Homebase, and garden centres both the chain ones like Wyvale and the independant ones.

One of my kids put an apple core in one of those living room woven basket/bins mildew!. Instead of chucking it i planted my strawberry plant in it. well the strawberry plant doubled in size and its not bothered by slugs any more :) its on its 2nd year and the bin has not fallen to bits its surprisingly strong and i can move it around the garden :).

Morrisons has the big tub for £3.99, they really are great! You dont see the bodies so you think it aint working at first, then you see there is no damage to your plants

that kept happening to me every night a trail through the front room. some how a slug or snail must have got trapped in doors but could i find the little   !! So i resorted to putting some slug pellets in the carpet near the trail (ofcourse you cant do this with kids or pets in the house) Two days later i found the biggest slug youve ever seen!!

we had the same problem last year until I went out at night and picked them up all I could see which was about 30-40 a night , all you can do is encourage blackbirds and thrushes , this year I have had none to move , as yet, the blackbirds are busy feeding their youngsters as are the thrushes, which are leaving empty snail shells all over the place. Hopefully it remains the same and the birds keep doing the job for me.....:j and the hedgehogs

This sounds the most natural way :j and perfect to get the birds back to do your job for you or were you doing their job for them :T anyway it must be good to see the thrushes and hear their songs. The blackbirds are quite good too we have one that whistles ''looney toons'' :rotfl: as the man further up whistles that every day he comes out into the garden:rotfl: :rotfl:
