Slugs and snails definitely like clay soils. :D

Squirrels don't like slug pellets but neither to do they like garlic.

So you can use either the garlic wash or the slug pellets.

thanks will try the garlic wash on my plants pots as they try to hide their nuts and eat my runners..blooming things:mad:

    Hiding nuts?

My pair of grey squirrels just dig around to see if I've planted any bulbs or seeds they can eat. I had great fun last year preparing part of a bed, covering it with bark mulch and leaving it fallow for nearly 3 months. They dug over the bed twice before they realised there was nothing planted there. (I caught them in the act.)

Never heard of the garlic wash before, but might give it a try when I get my veg patch up and running!

On my hostas, I use grit and pea shingle. Slugs never bother with them. Any slugs and snails I find get sent via airmail over the hedge onto the road ;)
  • I bought some Slug Blocker (slug and snail barrier gel) which is supposed to protect plants from attack. It is advertised as eco friendly, rain resistant, safe to use and degrades naturally. Unfortunately, it doesn't work! The fat slugs get past it no bother at all without any affect. Another £4.99 wasted!

I'll try the garlic wash now. Does anyone know how long the undiluted two pints will keep for before going off? And also do you have to spray every evening?
  • Also there is a product called Nemaslug its very effective and
is poison free, only downside is you should apply it every 6
weeks in summer and its about £8 a pack.

    I was wondering that too.
I sprayed my lettuces etc yesterday afternoon and it did dry on the leaves, but today it's been raining constantly so I'm guessing it's all off????????

something simple? try horse bran . the slugs eat it and it dries them out. and also they become a rasty bran filled snack for the garden predators that eat them.

I am going to decant the 2pts of garlic wash into an old plastic milk bottle or an old screw top fruit juice carton and close the cap tightly and keep it in the fridge. Hopefully, that will keep it from going off!
just make sure nobody tries to drink it!

I think you should be able to get horse bran from a local animal feed shop
