  • This is only practical if you live near the coast, but using seaweed on your garden is a brilliant fertiliser AND it keeps the slugs away!!

Just make sure you rinse the salt off first or you'll end up killing everything that grows!

    Hi everyone,

I have planted lettuces in pots for the first time this year. Although so far so good (they've been in 4 days), I feel sure they will be eaten by the healthy community of slugs and snails that live in out garden and eat our hostas every year. My husband is a keen bird watcher, and wouldn't hear of slug pellets---so please, please, can anyone suggest other ways of keeping the slugs off my crops.
    eagerly awaiting your suggestions...thank you.;)

    Hi there

In my family..we call Hostas "slug bait" as they love em..so you might be lucky that they are soooo busy eating that , that they might leave your lettuces alone ;)

I have my salad leaves in tubs n pots.. but i have some of that copper tape stuck around near the top to deter the pesky little blighters... You shouldn't have too much of a problem in tubs... just keep and eye out and check the tubs in the early evening when they come out to munch -im sure your hubby will be happy to stick them on the bird table -i do :p ..also early morning you can catch em trying to escape back into the dark damp areas and remove them again ......

There are entire threads about slugs and snails use the search button at the top for answers.

BTW I saw on Gardener's World a woman who holds the UKs National Hosta Collection she sprays a garlic wash over the Hostas. She chops two entire bulbs of garlic up and boils it up in 2 pints of water. She then strains the mixture and makes it back up to 2 pints. Then puts a dessert spoon of the mixture in a watering can, adds water until the can is full and sprinkles it over the hostas. I personally don't know if it works as I use slug pellets (as it stops the squirrels digging up my plants) and copper tape.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
