  • I received an email from the makers of Superspray who make hose end sprayers. I bought one last year for foliar feeding organic liquid feed. They say that they have had approval from NEMASLUG as an approved sprayer.

Apparentley, NEMASLUG is a product of 'nematode worms' which are microscopis and live in the soil. This particular worm eats sulgs from the inside out UGH! most of the damage done by slugs is of the variety that live under ground. and so unless out at night picking them off its difficult to control.

These worms come in a carrier gel which is partially diluted in the superspray and then sprayed on the ground with the hosepipe. Two applications six weeks apart. It increases the number if this particular worm in your garden and is the organic way to control slugs. Not sure if it works on snails though. need to research that. but it sounds good. Nemaslug is sold through The organic Gardening Catalogue and sprayer via www.superspray.co.uk. I have some on order to try.

not very loud but they can.
I recently removed a rather large ivy type climbing plant from a retaining wall in my garden.Behind it was a large 50+ colony of snails and slugs. My garden has been ruined by these bursturds this summer.i have put pellets down and still they attacked.
when i found their little hideaway ,i doused the wall with white spirit and set it alite.when they burn they scream
  • They probably do scream when they're set alight, but it is probably similar to a lobstor being put in boiling water. something to do with the shell and air inside it escaping. You can put the slugs and snails in your compost heap.

I really hope they scream, it would give me a sense of satisfaction :). Ive noticed that snails go fizz pop when salt is applied, they never used to. You should see what happens when Alloy wheel acid is sprayed on them.

Crude I know and I apoligise to all slug n snail lovers. But I hate them with a vengeance. I would hope they scream loud enough to warn any other oncoming slugs of the peril that awaits them.

  • OMG.. that is really cruel!!!!

Im not a keen gardener so i don't have any reason to dislike them.. infact i love snails, i have 4 giant african land snails in a tank..

Like bindweed suggested, why don't you put them in your compost bin (if you have one)
  • Bindweed, if you put live snails and slugs on your compost heap surely they will breed like mad as there is so much food available? Or did you mean put their dead (in some cases charred...!) bodies on for disposal?

Here's my tried and tested method for getting rid of slugs and snails. Even though I'm a newbie, trust me, it works. Every Spring, for a couple of weeks around March, I go out most nights with a torch and a pair of scissors. One minute they are eating their fill, the next minute they are in slug heaven. I leave the bodies in situ as a welcome breakfast for the birds and ground beetles. Very satisfying. By choosing your time carefully you take out practically a whole generation of would be breeders and will find much less damage later on. I garden organically and hate those blue pellets with a vengeance for the damage they do to the wildlife chain.

Library lass, I thought that too about snail eggs in the compost. However I was reliably informed (Thanks Lord Gardener) that the heat will kill off the eggs.

I can confirm that when applied correctly heat does kill the eggs and everything else sluggy and snailly.
  • Thanks for the 'Thanks' Jayar - did you see Rick Stein eating them on his 'French Trip' yesterday evening - better than watching the Rugby! My DD's only found 19 yesterday on our regular snail hunt - they get 5p a go - and were very disappointed!!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!

Poor snails!!!!!   :(

Why not just feed them to the birds? Thrushes in particular love them and whenever I find any I just throw them onto the lawn and sit watching as the thrushes swoop down to grab them, taking them onto the path to smash their shells open - food!!!! ;)
