something simple? try horse bran . the slugs eat it and it dries them out. and also they become a rasty bran filled snack for the garden predators that eat them.
Yep but the rats and mice absolutely love it as well, not something I would recommend for long use.

That's what he said: 'a rasty bran filled snack....' He obviously meant ' a ratsy bran filled snack...' Typo!:rotfl:

  • That's the garlic wash all boiled up and infusing - what a smell. Any ideas on what I can do with the bits of chopped garlic - does anyone tuck them around their plants as an extra deterent? Off topic - my DS wants me to use a little bit of the garlic wash when I'm making some bread and to add some herbs. Any thoughts on whether it would work?

Blimey! I'm not keen on slugs eating my plants but would rather this than such a horrible death some of you guys and girls advocate!

I am looking for an ethical and harmless way to keep the slugs and snails away from my plants. Already using copper strips for the pots, but when it comes to planting them out in the open, they're really exposed and end up with no leaves!

    Any advice most appreciated! Dee

The copper tape needs to be serrated to really ensure the slugs and snails don't climb up the sides of the pots.

Also you need to make sure there is absolutely no way the slug/snail can jump on to the leaves from a wall, another plant, a leaf or object.

The plant pot needs to be raised off the ground so slugs can't come up through the drainage holes as apparently there is a slug that comes up through the soil.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Hello, I hope some of you greenfingered moneysavers can help me out. I have just started getting into gardening this year and I am growing tomoatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, carrots, spring onions, lettuces, peas, radish, courgettes, potatoes, chives, parsley, rocket, mint, strawberries. Many of the veg I have started from seed including the peas which I have really been looking forward to eating. They sprouted about 2 weeks ago and of the 20 or so seeds that I sowed, all germinated and most of them were promptly munched by slugs/snails. Only 3 are left  Also, about 5 lettuces were munched completely.

I want to use completely natural methods of slug control to keep any nasty chemicals getting into the food chain so I first tried a product called "slug off".This is like a water-absorbing gravel which seemed to work for a while but then I found it gets washed away fairly quickly after rain/watering and its expensive to keep buying new packs. I then tried the jam jar half filled with beer trick which I must say is amazing - on damp nights, I am catching around 40-50 slugs :T. I have a lot of lettuce, radish etc. in pots at the moment and I have bought lots of copper tape for these which I have found to be 100% effective. Now, my main problem is that anything I have planted in the ground like the peas, lettuce etc is still getting munched by the little blighters even with 3 jars of beer to try and attract them away. I have been so looking forward to eating my own veg. that this is beginning to seem like a problem that I just can't get on top of. It's just so depressing to see all the new seedlings popping out of the ground, getting my hopes up of my first home-grown veg - only to see them dashed the next day as they are destroyed. Is there anything else I can do?

We too had immense problems with slugs and, despite wanting to use the most 'natural method' of disposing of them, have had to resort to slug pellets.

We have, however, netted everything to stop the birds picking up the dying/dead slugs. Since we've put the pellets down, I simply can't believe the amount of slugs that are in our garden !!! Literally hundreds !!!

I have to say that i'm pleased we put them down as I honestly don't think that we would have had anything left if we'd continued without the pellets. We too had seedlings disappearing overnight and leaves totally destroyed by slugs:mad: . I had to more or less start some things over again from scratch and now we're behind by about 2 weeks but everything is now growing nicely and nothing has any slug damage on it ! :T

Hope you manage to find a solution !

Horrible isn't it :( ... every one of the dwarf bean plants I had are now just stalks poking out of the ground.

We need an army of hedgehogs!
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
