Hi all, we have been asked to sell a car (owner has left the country) but the MOT has expired a while ago. What I found out so far is that it would be ok to drive the car to the next MOT station but the car is not insured either. Now I read here that it would be possible to cancel a policy within a "cooling off" period (14 days?). Would that be of any problem in our situation (legally)? What are the costs of cancellation within the initial period?0

The owner needs to insure it. You cannot.
But you may have "driving other cars" third party insurance on your policy, or your may find a friend with it to drive it to and from the garage. (Note that will only be legal third party cover, and wouldn't cover any damage done by the driver to the uninsured car)0 -
The best way to find cheaper insurance is by using price comparison sites to compare quotes. Try the following sites to compare:
- theycompare.co.uk
- confused.com
- moneysupermarket.com
- gocompare.com

Thanks a lot for your input, Quentin! But how is 'owner' legally defined? We have all the papers for the car. Does this mean that the car cannot be sold until the 'true' owner signs the V5C?0 -
No.
It means you cannot take out insurance for the car as you are not its owner.0 -
If you are considering buying insurance through moneyexpert, please note their strict cashback terms – these have changed recently so that you have to apply for the payment between 14 and 30 days after commencement. I got caught out as the ‘before 30 days’ rule has been introduced since I made the purchase. I printed the cashback T&Cs on 8 June 2009 and it wasn’t there. Can anyone think of a way I could still claim with a chance of succeeding?0

Write and explain the situation, enclose a copy of the Ts +cs in force at the time you did your transaction and ask them to pay up.
If this is ignored consider issuing a money claim via the county court/MCOL0 -
Hi
Anyone out there insuring a long owned PLG van on ultra low annual mileage and now also a car as a daily runaround? Both owner driver only. Im desperate to lower the costs of my annual £450 bill :eek:as i might be forced to lose the van otherwise and its been a godsend for picking up cheap house goods and carting motorbikes around.
Surely there must be a sympathetic insurer out there that knows i cant drive both at onceand ive got long term history as a no claims driver...just got to find who they are!
any ideas welcome ive got a month to work out a cunning plan and screenscrapers dont cover two vehicles in one-and very rarely vans
Anyone got the same issue? What do you do?

1. You buy policy online (in my case Car Insurance) for a price £X
2. They call and claim that the details you entered actually mean that the policy is now £X+200 and give you a choice - pay the extra cost or cancel and pay £63 for the privilege of cancelling the policy!!
I managed to prove that the details I entered were correct (via an email from gocompare) but still had to pay a small extra amount for the policy. They also have a clever website which doesn't allow you to login and see the details that you entered once you have paid.
Anyone else had any problems with them?0 -
Got a letter from AA to say my insurance was about to be renewed by DD but i had 14 days to change my mind. So went on confused.com and I found a cheaper quote which would save me £180!!!! The AA was going to charge me £380 a year; the new one is £201. I arranged the new one and then rang up AA to cancel and they are going to charge me £50 adminisitration fee for cancelling. I said that was disgusting. They said I could pay it by DD so i said ok.. I 'm thinking of cancelling my DD to them but then I know it will get passed to the credit ref agencies/bailliffs etc.. so i'm stuck..
NEVER USE THE AA FOR INSURANCE - THEY ARE A DISGRACE0
