I've just passed my driving test. I was looking for a cheap insurance for 6-8 year old car (Honda Accord or Toyota Avensis) and the best quote I got was around £1000.
Is it the normal price for a new driver? If not, how much can I expect to pay? Any ideas?

Unfortunately as a new driver you will pay over the odds. When I passed I paid around £1000 for my ford fiesta. If you add another older driver then it reduces it. Mine dropped by about £100. The next year it dropped significantly to under £600

I'm in the same boat. I've been tweaking the search all day and the things that worked to bring it down were adding an experienced driver, going 3rd party, fire and theft, changing my job title with the tool here, low estimated mileage, engine size (since I haven't bought a car yet, just preparing). The cheapest I found was £800, which isn't bad considering the worst price I've seen today was £3500.

The funny thing is that adding Pass Plus to the search did nothing. Zero. Zilch. Might be different for some people (boys probably). And finally, gocompare.com are coming back with the cheapest quotes by hundreds of pounds compared to Tesco search and Confused.

    Good luck!
  • Hi, I just wanted to share our experience of finding best value car insurance recently.

We were insured with Sheila's Wheeels who gave us a renewal quote of £180. The best price I got from the comparison websites was £157 ... from, guess who, Sheila's.

Following Martin's 3-step plan I went on to the cashback sites. TopCashback were offering £45 for clickthrough to Sheila's ... but when I completed the application the quoted premium came to a whopping £265!!

I had similar results when I was shopping for home insurance in June. IMHO these cashback sites are a complete waste of time and the resultant premium is higher by more than the cashback that isn't even 100% guaranteed ... but I'd be interested to hear what others have found.

There are at least two earlier posts in this thread that relate the same experience. Having said that, I had £120 cashback last year for taking out insurance that cost not much more than that, so, in effect, I got the insurance for peanuts. But those are rarities.
  • Can anyone help me please?

I am coming to the end of a Driving Disqualification, I get my license back on the 1st of January.

I have recently bought my car and was wondering if I can Insure my car while it is sitting on my drive (not for driving).

I know a family member or friend could insure it for me for a couple of months but this would incur costly cancalation charges.

    Any advice would be welcome.

quick update, more than have now assigned me a personal manager, admitted they have messed up so many times.... BUT now they say for them to insure me i have to have a factory fitted ALARM, when the model i have only comes with a factory fitted immobiliser.... they say that although i did tell them about the non alarm from the beginning, and they made the mistake of accepting it, putting it on the policy, then changing it to saying i have an alarm on the last policy, i am now in breach of contract and not insured as i dont have an alarm!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...

they also say that IF they honour the policy they will send me a letter stating they will not insure me after that....

so ive dumped them, and got a very cheap, very good cover and very good customer service from... NFU...

  • Hi

I wanted to share this info with you all, I received the Renewal Car Insurance Form - Car Insurance (Same Insurer) saved roughly £45.00 buying online !

PS: I received the Renewal Home Insurance which has gone up to £300.00 for 'Buildings only'. I went onto the Website of my Insurer and requested an identical Policy (I have my booklet to hand), low and behold it's almost £100.00 cheaper if I buy online !

I went onto Tesco Site and managed to save a further £50.00 - so you can see where I'm going for my Insurance this time !

What a rip off from the Insurance people - there's something wrong somewhere !

    Thanks
    Leefy
  • Hi all, Newbie here!!

I got my renewal quote through from Tesco. I've been with them since I had my provisional license and this was the first year i was entitled to protect my no claims of 4 years (im 21) Their quote was £530.25 plus "Just.." an additional £138.60 to protect them, so a total of £668.85.

I had to ring around for quotes, as some websites wont accept I have 4 years no claims and have held a license 3 years, as Tesco counted my No Claims from my provisional days.

I got a quote from More Than which was £424, with the no claims included, and because I said I heard of them through their website I was entitled to the online discount too!
So an overall saving of £244!! :j
  • In my experience do not use Swiftcover. My car was kicked in in June, the garage looked at it , and sent off their estimate to Swiftcover. Swiftcover say you are suppossed to hear when you can take your car in for repair, I waited, and waited. In the end I had to call Swiftcover to get them to call the garage, so I could get the repair. This took until August. At the same time Swiftcover told me I should go ound to the person responsible and ask for my excess (£200). I asked what does legal cover cover? No reply. Until I complained several times. At last they did something, but never sent out the form for release of details from Police! I'm still waiting for the pricely sum of £200, from them. I sent them an email but so far no reply. Mind you I've only waited a week !!

    PLUS:
Insure of Equity House, Bergholt Road, Colchester., told me the web site has a fault, it should show Excss of £400, plus your voluntary excess of £200. Also they chage more to use your car to drive too work!
  • Hello peeps,
Wondering if it's possible to cancel your car insurance and reapply online with the same insurer immediately, to get a cheaper quote? Another incentive is to aim for cashback via the usual sites.
    Possible?
    Danke.
