  • LOL very true, next best deal is the AA, so it looks like i may go with them
  • Hello!

Long story, but after buying privately from someone who had not declared the car as being CAT D I have ended up with it. I have been so fortunate as the Peugeot garage have been fantastic as it's a 57 plate and honoured the warranty meaning I have only ended up paying a fraction of what I could have to repair all that was wrong with it. That'll teach me for not bringing a mechanic with me

Does anyone have any advice on insurers that will insure a CAT D vehicle?

    Thank you :-)
  • After doing Martins tips on going through different screen scrapers etc.. got £60 off our cars. But when phoned Admiral (we have their multi car policy) and said I found both cars cheaper than renewal after answering the usual questions came back with a quote £105 cheaper than renewal!! Why didn't they offer that in first place?
  • wondered if anyone can help me. I have tried all the price comparison web sites listed for sourcing cheap car insurance and have a quote of £195 with the halifax. I went onto quidco and they do cashback for halifax car insurance, £40, if i delete cookies should it track?
  • Congratulations to MSE on producing an excellent process for identifying the best value car insurance policy.

I used it again recently and was offered on line a fully comp price of just over £100 for two old drivers ( 10+ years ncd) driving an even older car.

Fantastic price.Well done The AA. You made me feel good.:j

I started to buy the policy on line only to receive a message saying that the office was now closed ( so why close the on line process?), but was given a personal code to quote on line during the given office hours.

When returning to the web site during the given hours and putting in the code I was told that my request could not be actioned on line but to phone the AAs freephone number.

The very chilly person on the phone told me that she could not find the form I had completed on line and the code I gave her was dismissed.

She quoted me a price some 30% higher than the on line price ( sure still only £135) which I refused as I felt I had been conned.

Perhaps I am the only person this has happened to but I am left feeling betrayed and angry  at the AA for hooking me and then trying to extract a higher price from me.

  • I recently renewed my car insurance and used all the comparison sites mentioned in the article, the cheapest was moneysupermarket and with the RAC, when I rang the RAC they couldn't give me the insurance for the amount shown by moneysupermarket, the chap said that they don't know how the comparison sites work and they've had this problem before and he couldn't tell me how moneysupermarket came to such a low price! so beware that these comparison sites don't always work. What I did do was then ring my current insurance and told them the cheap price RAC was showing on moneysupermarket and they matched it, even though RAC couldn't!!!!!! Saved a fortune.
  • Hadrian, you personally wouldn't insure anyone under the age of 25? lol a little extreme don't you think, thats taking out quite a large generation of drivers there..However I definately do agree with your judgement that the younger drivers (17-20) are responsible for the majority of accidents of today, heck its a fact! Hence women getting cheaper car insurance by the day.

  • I recently moved house and rang Kwik Fit to notify them of my new address.

There was a change of premium of about £11, fair enough I've moved from a village to a town so I kinda expected that.

However there was also a £25 admin charge to do this

Not sure this is proportionate to changing an 4 line address on my policy and adding a new phone number. I told them of my outrage in no uncertain terms and that when it comes to renewal time I will be changing insurers...they told me that there was nothing they could do, but that they would refund the cost if I took my house insurance cover out with them!!!!!!!

Needless to say when my cover expires in December I'll be going with someone else.

I've found Kwik Fit to be pretty good in the past, just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems recently? I know theres a 'credit crunch' on, but I'm not sure these sort of charges are justified!

Kwik Fit are not so good.

A friend of mine, whose house has been underpinned, changed his insurance to Kwik Fit because it was cheaper than Halifax. However, his house has been underpinned some 20 odd years ago and he told Kwik Fit about this and they went ahead with issuing the policy. A year later they rang to renew it and my friend mentioned about the underpinning again. Kwik Fit then said they couldn't insure the property. My friend was left wondering if his house had actually been insured in the first place and whether or not the over-zealous salesman who sold him the first policy, with an eye on his commission, had not declared that the house had been underpinned to the underwriter. So, as you can imagine, he was not impressed with Kwik Fits' performance and he tells them where to go when they continually phone him about house/car insurance.
  • Got my renewal from elephant other day £588 (Accident 1 1/2 Yrs ago).
Went on confused got a quote lowest £339 Co-op pay up front. Phoned elephant lovely girl nice accent, believe it or not I asked where she came from and she says she works in the Canadian call centre, good start!!! anyway explained quote from elephant and about the quotes from Confused.com, yes she says I can drop you immediately down to £488, getting somewhere I thought, however I said still to expensive so she ran thru a couple of points and took of my extra hire car for write off only, garage cover etc which I dont need, and said all in all she can get it to £457; a bit of banter about credit crunch and how it is a buyers market etc so she then said to hold so she could spk with her manager. After that she said that a final quote with Direct Debit would be £397, still not happy I said you still cant beat online quotes and how I dont want to change provider as it a hassle etc etc then she says I can give it to you cheaper if you pay up front so I said how much and she quotes £308, so paid it, sorted.

    Points to note
    1. I went on the phone with a quote from them sitting at £588 having had an accident 18 mnths ago and claimed £1500 & lost 1 yr NCB.
    2. Immediately my quote dropped to £488.
    3. Basic haggle ref online price and took of added extras £457
    4. Manager involvement £397
    5. Finally if I pay up front £308

A saving of £280 in a matter of 10 mins max.

Usually I would not have pushed it as far however after reading Martins emails, and your feedback on here it just proves what a rip off the system can be, normally I would have accepted that first quote and paid, shocking i wonder how many others feel ripped off at times.
