They will reach a decision based on the reports they get (from you and any claimant).

If you personally agree to pay him off, get a signed receipt from your colleague which states "the payment is in full and final settlement, and this payment is not an admission of liability".

To save your colleague having to mess around getting his excess back off you/your insurer he could contact your insurer direct with his quote and ask them to agree to pay his claim. (Which may include other expenses he is put to: eg car hire whilst his is being repaired, cost and inconvenience getting quotes, phone calls etc).
  • Hello everyone
Business as usual, yearly car insurance renewal, right?
Stay in safe hands, stay with Norwich Union, right?
Your premium has gone down 2 pounds a month, great!
    BUT...
I called them because they told me a year ago that once my wife gets her full driving license (she just did), the premium will be significantly reduced, and I felt 2 pounds was not 'significant' by any stretch of the imagination.
So I asked and they said this to me: "Oh, can you hold for a minute?...
(1 minute later) We can give you another 10 pounds off as a loyal customer (bringing the premium down to 65 per month!)
So I said OK, but let me make some calls.
I looked at my options, and found Tesco to offer the same cover with a better excess for 47 pounds.
I was going to be kind so I called Norwich to see if they'd match it, but they had none of it.
So here I am, having saved about 300 pounds.
Sorry Norrie. What a way to be ground down by the crunch.

Sorry if this has already been posted. Don't have time to trawl through the posts, but thought you should know that these comparison sites offer cashback on Quidco and Topcashback. £2 per search for Insure supermarket through Top, and £2 for GoCompare on Quidco.
Found this out after I'd used them!
  • My car is now 12 years old - it's a diesel in good condition with a full service history. It should last me at least another couple of years. Should I still be using fully comp insurance or could I get away with fire and theft only?

You might get a pleasant surprise when you compare the difference in the quotes.

If you are prepared to just write off your car if it's involved in a crash, see what it would cost if you take the highest excess available when getting quotes. You may be able to accept an excess which is higher than your car is worth, making the comprehensive quote cheaper than a third party one.
  • Thanx for that, I will consider it. Insurance renewal is due 01/02/2009 so I will be looking for new quotes straight after the December festivities.
  • In Martin's article it reads "For every year you don't claim on the insurance policy you get a discount. This makes a substantial difference to the overall cost. "

I just want to let the whole world know that this isn't necessarily true!! Sorry Martin but you need to rewrite that. Read the small print of your policy, as I have just been stung by not reading mine! You don't always accrue NCD even though you haven't claimed - I haven't made a claim in the last 2 years, however I have not gained any NCD as my policy says in small print that you do not accrue no claims discount with this policy. It was for an MG ZS, not an old or classic one really IMO but was insured with Lancaster so comes under their policy as a classic car which I hadn't realised.

I am now back to square one with tyring to get on the no claims discount ladder!!

    That policy is the exception.

In any case, you are always urged to check out the details of any policy you buy to ensure it meets your needs, and to do something about it if it doesn't!

Yet you have held this policy for 2 years, even though it isn't what you want?? (And presumably got the advice twice to check through the documents (once when you bought it, and again when you renewed it).)

As Martin says premiums are much cheaper this time of year . I did a similar scan of all the comparison sites in July and the cheapest available was £395 for the cover I wanted. This Saturday, when I genuinely wanted the insurance, I got the same cover (with a lesser excess) for £255.

I didn't know that this time of year was a cheaper price time, because I'm one of the unfortunates who's car insurance renewal date is the 21st Dec.
I followed Martin's tips on the site and saved £120. My renewal quote on current policy with churchill was £438.90, thats with 9 yrs on full licence, 2 yrs no claims, 2 speeding convictions and excess of £150.
The cheapest with the price comparison sites was Yes Insurance at £406, but then I went straight to Churchills site and got a quote as a new customer (This is because a lot of companys wouldn't give a quote on the price comparison, due to the speeding convictions). As a new customer at Churchill I was quoted £318 but my excess is now £350 (new quote would have been £350 if I still wanted £150 excess and a courtesey car). So I rang churchill and they honoured the quote that I was given.

Look where the "Pipeline Guys" actually ended up. (Using our details not to get us cheaper petrol, but to try and flog us membership of the utility warehouse!)
